Does anyone know if i can change to tesco momentum rather than using shells over inflated fuel, my cars been mapped for v power but would it hurt my engine if i was to start using tescos instead, im all for saving money on my weekly fuel bill, as its currently costing me about £100 a week.

Cars a 2004 blob sti.

My car started life as a blob WRX although it's very different now. After mapping to V Power, I ran it on nothing but that until I got stuck, about a month ago and had to put in some 97 from Texaco. Half an hour later the exhaust was spewing smoke everywhere on idle even. We reckoned the ecu retarded the ignitition timing to compensate as it had been used to higher RON for so long and had been mapped to it.

I ran the tank through filled up with V Power a couple more times and the issue was resolved. The car runs perfectly as before and no smoke to speak of.

I'm not saying that's gospel by any means, but take from it what you will.

I'd say it would run fine on tesco momentum due to being 99 Ron same as shell mate

In my experience (I've just done exactly the same thing, though my car's a 2.0 Hawk) the only difference is a) price - it's cheaper at Tesco; and b) mpg - it's more on Momentum.

As I've said - about 2-3% cheaper fuel bills and 15% more mpg.
So you'd be a couple of quid better in your pocket but you'd also fill up farther apart.

I reckon you'd notice the difference in just a week.

PS There's no way I would go anywhere near compromising my car (not saying you would) so you can rest assured that I was more than happy with the advice I got from members here, to the extent that I filled the entire tank with Momentum, not simply a few gallons.

I would agree with the fortuitous Cambrian lad on that one too, I find I get around 20mpg on the V Power I have to use round here, though in Warwickshire the Momentum returns around 22-23mpg. But there could be other reasons for that.

Shell do appear to have put their prices up compared to everyone else recently and annoyingly a lot of garages in the North West have changed from Shell to BP, I wouldn't put that 97 bollcks into my car if it was free!

Nitro+ is £1.45 a litre at my local Shell in Bracknell. Prices seem to change between 1.43 to £1.47 a litre on a week by week basis.

Its a good thing my company pays for my fuel (Dont hate on me for that comment) lol

I'm trying Nitro for the first time this tank and so far it seems to be doing ok, but that may just be the mind playing games.

I track my fuel stats so will do a couple of tanks and see what I get.

The only negative is I get Momentum at work for £1.32.9 so it's going to have to be considerably better for me to stick with it.

my local shell was 145.9 today, but i had a voucher for 5p a litre off at tesco

tesco 99 was only 135.9 and then got 5p off too.

my last tank was nitro and i got 23mpg (330bhp and it included a RR power run and a RR mapping session)

Well, my first tank of Momentum has been consumed.

I'd been getting 20-23mpg, the upper part when I've had a few motorway journeys.

On my first tank of Momentum I achieved 22. With the journeys I've done (most of them shorter, and with overtaking bursts) I'd have expected nearer 20.

It's not a precise science but I do think I'll get more miles per tank out of Momentum.

More importantly, it's 4p/litre cheaper than V-power Nitro EXCEPT when you've a 5p off per litre coupon, which Tesco seem to do quite frequently ( we've a Morrisons quite close, so competition helps).

Today I filled up at more than 9p/litre cheaper, about £4 saved.

Although extreme, it could be said that I'll fill-up 10% less and when I do if I time it right each fill-up will cost 6% less.
I make that a saving on fuel costs of around 15%.

Oh - and I had the car remapped today, on Momentum.
Initial reading 348/360, remapped to 373/389.

A dyno with the car's very FSH shows 362/350 on V-Power.

I can't believe I'm doing a sales pitch for Tesco.

Nearest Nitro+ to me (5 miles) is 141.6, local Momentum 137.4.

Makes you wonder how they can do it though, doesn't it, all these petrol vouchers.

As it happens consistently the cheapest petrol in the wider area (15-mile radius) is a Waitrose in Abergavenny.
I bet the remap for that would be interesting.

£1.40.9 per litre at sarn services which is my only shell garage within 30 miles. its not too bad as i will go there from work so only an extra 40 min return trip time. i tried a tank of momentum and i must say, both myself and the car did not like it, it felt flat and lacking power. it was however much warmer than when i put v power in at the time so i dont know if i was just experiencing the benefit of -2 temps after filling up with v power. either way, its v power all the way for me. As i live close to work the difference of a few quid per fill up is negated as a full tank will last me nigh on 2 weeks. i do however understand those who do a lot more miles per week than me and are questioning the value of shell, if your car likes it then who am i to argue!

I don't even bother looking anymore, I just fill it up but then I only use mine at the weekends so its not as severe on the old pocket as it used to be!

i've just done long distance back to back comparison with nitro and tesco 99. steady driving, sat at 80mph (speedo reading) most of the way, 350 miles

i went from sheffield to newquay using tesco momentum, i had just under 1/4 tank left and got over 33mpg. i filled up with nitro when i was down there and then filled up again just before the journey home. just got home and the needle is reading just on the empty mark, so i know i've used more fuel over the same distance, i'll find out how much different when i fill up next time i take it out.

BTW, it was 145.9p near newquay

I'll stick my neck out - looks like approx 16-20% better mpg.

As it happens, following remapping (with Momentum) last week I've normally done about 150-160 miles when the needle's down to 1/4 but I'm already up to 169 and it's still just above that mark, even with the remapping runs.

That's like 20% more efficient or something right? Absolutely no way. 1% or 2% maybe. Might be worth trying to check it on fuelly (if they break it down by fuel type?).

I just fill my diesel Golf with Sainsbury's ditch water these days. It's 135p I think. At up to 60 mpg I don't have to do it very often. I'm still on the same tank I used to drive to Glasgow and back a couple of weeks ago (420 miles).

"If only Subaru did diesel Imprezas..................", eh?

Never mind.
I get people looking at my car and wishing they were me at least twice as often as they stand dumbstruck at having seen a er... Golf diesel in the flesh.

"Sainsbury's diesel - so good that VW Golf's use it", doesn't have quite the same ring to it as "Tesco - giving a Subaru even more Momentum".

I've filled up again and it returned 23mpg, despite all my journeys being short (<20 miles) and the remapping runs (and power uprating).

I definitely think Momentum's more efficient.

well, i filled up yesterday and worked out the mpg for shell nitro, only 29mpg

so, over 350 miles each way, steady driving both ways, momentum has returned 10% better mpg

nitro = 29.5 mpg
momentum = 33 mpg

so, better mpg and cheaper too, tesco 99 FTW
