VTA dump valves always remind me of S2 RST's "back in the day", it was rare to hear one without a VTA!
I personally don't rate them, and given the fact that they don't play ball well with the MAF would be good reason to avoid IMHO. You could try and map to minimise the impact, but it's still going to affect the car.
I'm not sure what benefit you'd see putting an aftermarket recirc on either, I would imagine its no better or worse than a stock one, although I'm sure I'll be corrected if that's not the case.
IMHO, I think the money could be spend better elsewhere.

So I thought perhaps an aftermarket recirc might be slightly louder but do no harm to the engine unlike the VTA.

The only reason I mentioned an aftermarket recirc is because I am one of those god awful, hell bound people who actually like a little woosh/tisssh when I change gear lol! BUT I don't want an insainly loud noise, just a little more than what the standard valve gives out currently with an aftermarket panel filter fitted.

For what you're after, it seems like the best idea then!

I am going to add my 2 cents worth, I have been using vta valves for years now and never had any problems on numerous different turbo charged cars they were used to add spool up on gear changes nothing else the fact they make a noise has always been secondary to me.i do agree with what has been said about putting them on a car.that is running standard pressures and it interfering with the maf sensor. One more thing I would like to add, everyone that's worth there salt has to have a big respect for top tuners like the rcm team matt olley etc...I had a chat a good few years ago with them about this same topic and was told that vta valves have there place with highly tuned big boost car's thats why he sells them I doubt RCM would sell a part that could destroy engines with there reputation . Think about it.SJ.

Highly tuned big boost cars almost certainly wont be running a maf anymore though, and a vta doesnt improve spool at all over a recirc.
As for an uprated recirc, such as a forge, they have theyre place as they control a higher boost more effectively and can be tuned with the springs and shims to suit each application.

I imagine I'm in the same boat as the OP, pretty new to the whole scooby scene having only owned my Hawkeye STI for only a year. Because of this I like to read up on EVERYTHING before I do anything to a car, I was the same with my old Golf VR6 (although that was a lot easier to get a definitive answer on mods due to the age and the amount of testing etc that had been done by various tuners etc).
It's been pretty hard to find a conclusive answer to the dv question through using the search function on here so so far all the genuine replies have been pretty helpful and I've drawn the conclusion:
A) If I wanted to run a vent to air dv I would be better off running MAFless and getting it mapped (although a few folk haven't found this to be a requirement but it airs on the side of caution). But there is still a risk that it could hinder performance or worse still, ruin the engine.
B) A recirc dv is a safer option, retains the MAF and less noisy option then the VTA dv but does give slightly more sound than the standard recirc but still best to get it mapped once fitted.
C) Some people have found that there can be an advantage from running both providing the car is mapped and set up properly for each application.
So again, thanks to all those that have contributed and cleared this confusion up for me

At the end of the day bud, do to your motor whatever you want to, there are always arguments for and against, and all that folks will do, is give you opinions, sometimes passively, sometimes aggressively. Whichever way you choose, it's your decision
It's your car, and the main point is that you enjoy it the way YOU want to!

are you saying that because im not mechanically skilled i shouldnt get involved with the sport at all?
i thought the whole idea of track days was to get everyone and anyone of any age or skill and car to come along and enjoy taking your car to speeds you wouldnt be able to on uk roads.

I wouldn't give you any grief either way. It's not a subject that i feel strongly about on anyone's motor other than my own.

i love imprezas, but this isnt your everyday impreza , its a shed which has been parked up in someones back yard growing trees out of it. perfect track car, not exactly going in next months edition of fast car. put it that way. so if it does get ruined it doesnt matter to me, i bought it for that reason.

you may have got off on the wrong foot on here.
but theses dump valve threads always get several pages, do a search.
one question I have to ask though, if the car gets ruined and you don't care, why not just fit a vta dump valve and ebay brakes and carry on??
