Well I'm back pondering about this again and I've been thinking of biting the bullet for the last 2 weeks looking at various options on the internet. I rang up a private selling wanting to enquire about his car but he's at work and will get back to me later this evening to answer all my questions.
I'm looking at a Honda Civic SPORT 1.6 petrol.... looks like an older Type-R but only £300 insurance compared to my £800, very cheap tax and hopefully mega reliable. Plus 0-60 in 10 seconds and combined 42MPG. 2005 plate with 17" Type-R alloys and spoiler
It's priced at £3700 so hopefully knock him down to £3200 if all is well and I go ahead with it.

Er you want to be knocking him down more than that! That is well overpriced. You can pick up Type Rs with less mileage (standard too) for less money.
Good choice of car though. I drive a Type R myself and it is ultra reliable and pretty good on juice tbh.

I spoke to the chap and he was only budging down to £3500 so I left it. I think £3200 would have been a fair price. All the 05 civic sports with 70-80k miles seem to be around £3000-3300 but I need one to have the 17" type R alloys and rear spoiler which limits my choice
...and yes, you can pick up Type r's for pretty much the same price as the Sports.
