How did we like our first view of Scunthorpe?
Plus, my wife came from a family that lived on benefits, NINE kids, the father having walked out when the youngest was two.
The children from that family:
One into the RAF, then a supervisor with Securicor transport.
One in the army, then a logistics supervisor in haulage.
One became a joiner, just retired,
Three girls one a trained nurse, now living in Australia, the other two part time workers also in Australia.
The youngest three, my wife, a primary headteacher, well-respected, her sister, an exams officer at the University of London, and the youngest, a chef, worked all over the world.
So kids from poor families CAN make something of themselves.

The problem is we're giving them money not the means to survive. Tokens for utilities, vouchers for food and credit at the charity shop for clothes and home goods. What's the problem with that? They can sell the food to buy ****, booze and drugs.
And I wouldn't even give them that for nothing, four hours a day cleaning up the town should do it, imagine how nice that place would be if people worked.

So if you did what you suggested, I reckon the crime rate would go sky high.
One thing we could try is a three strikes and you are out for drug crime.

Just started watching this program due to seeing this thread.
I suspect part of their success came from the fact that it used to be a bad thing to be 'poor'. Now, being poor just means that you turn to crime (judging by Skint) to get what you want. There is no social responsibility anymore.
As others have said, this problem doesn't just exist up north, it is the social attitude of a lot of people that are bringing this country to it's knees.

Unlike China, where the state still comes first. If you have kids out of wedlock, you are fined. It's deemed "bad" for society.

It is interesting isn't it, in the 80's when the process of de-industrialising vaste swathes of the UK was just starting, and the UK began using unemployment as a central plank of economic policy
We had protests in the form of the "right to work marches" (I used to go to she secret gigs at the end of the marches to see The Jam play)
