I read this thread last night, having fitted a blue filter to my hawk eye a couple of weeks ago it worried me so checked it this morning and no leaks present, I ordered the filter and oil from Scooby World, but have ordered a genuine black filter from Scooby Clinic and will be fitting it as soon as it arrives.

yeh I bought oil and filter from Subaru and did notice that it was a black filter that came off, and it was the blue filter Subaru sent me
I have noticed that it was smaller and after mbe 2 wks of it being fitted it leaks a little bit
is this the part number of the black one 15208aa100?, if not could some1 please give me the correct part number as I plan to buy the bigger black 1 asap now, I do not wish to take any chances

That is the correct part number.

I've posted this before but might be a good place for the info for those interested.
I use the genuine Mazda RX8 oil filter. It's made by Roki Japan the same manufacturer as the original black Subaru spec oil filter. It also has the same bypass pressure (unlike most of the rest) and it's slightly larger capacity upping the oil capacity to a shade under 5L.
Part number is N3R1-14-302 and available from your local Mazda dealer.
I personally only use these on my car. I wouldn't touch a blueprint one since I bought one and there were no oil flow holes in the separator plate lol, imagine if someone had fitted that! Best bit was the clown in euro car parts who couldn't see a problem and blanked me when I told him not to put it back into stock.

Ugh, I've somehow neglected to see this until now. I've got a genuine Subaru blue filter from Opie Oils, would the consensus be to leave it and use a black one regardless of them being checked?
Or is all this worry just unnecessary hype over an old batch?

Yeah I'd much rather lay down a tenner for the peace of mind if the jury is still out on this one. Just thought I'd check in to see if a sound conclusion had been reached pointing otherwise - I guess not! Cheers Dave

As far back as 2011 I raised the question of the quality of the blue filters.

This link covers it well enough.

The video isn't working for me, but based on the posts, the video suggests the filters are poor quality? Fair enough, if that is the case, but I have seen a couple of videos where people cut open a filter, pull out the gauze, measure it and rate the filters based on the amount of gauze in there. Hope the video wasn't like that as the amount of gauze doesn't matter, it's more about how effective it is.
I'm not a massive fan of OEM filters, as far as I am aware, they are all made by filter manufacturers, just rebadged and with a higher price tag. To me, you're better off buying a filter from the filter manufacturer as you know what you are getting and not paying extra for it. We only started selling OEM filters due to demand, but if anyone asks me for a filter for their car, I tend to recommend the UFI or Mahle ones. We sell thousands of them with no quality problems.
Cheers
Tim

there was a specific issue with ONE batch of the Blue OE filters, years ago and plenty of people use with no issues before and since............
the BLACK JDM spec OE filter is about as good as it gets unless you want to pay slightly more for the RCM m/sport version
all carried in stock at very competitive pricing as with all of our components
