This thread is stupid.... i won yesterday and therfore think horse racing is brilliant.
Next youll be banning sharp, pointed flapjacks just in case someone trips and put an eye out.....
Horses live racing... you dont see them stand still, throwing their riders off then going for a nibble on the grass do you.
Puff....

Im sure horses love running and jumping , when they feel like it. If they love it so much let them race with no jockies and see how it goes.
Boxers choose to box (as all sports people choose their sport) but animals (in this case horses) would hardly choose to race all their lives.
Racing dogs would be different as they choose to chase the rabbit. Imagine if you will , using the same logic as horse racing - if they didnt chase the rabbit and you put something on their backs to "encourage" them (going by the argument the horse-whip is for sound , a similarly distressing sound could be used for a dog) stick a few jumps in there for lol's. If they get hurt they get put down . " oh , but dogs love running dont they ?"

I am sorry that the horse died, but as an animal lover I would be wouldn't I?
At least all the horses in the Grand National got round without any deaths, they did at least modify the fences to make them safer and it seems to have worked this time.
Never ever play hockey against a womens' team, they are vicious!

.......... might be deaths and serious spinal injuries, the hour is late.
Horse riding is one of the most dangerous sports, Daughter has taken a couple of tumbles in the last year which could have been serious. Body armour and helmet a must.
Playing hockey is the best way to lose an eye

I backed the winner £5 each way @ 100/1 so I'm all for a bit of horse racing lol.
I think horse racing is fine, I get more annoyed by the hundreds of horses you see tethered on the edge of the road by gypos tbh

Race horses are bred for racing that's all they know, if they break a leg they will almost certainly have to be put down because they cant put any weight on the leg and will probably suffer from laminitis which is far more distressing for the animal.
I am not a punter of horses but have mates who do and I often argue whether it is a sport or not as it only exists for gambling purposes.

The problem is that it becomes uneconomic for racehorse owners to put the time and effort into the vetinary care necessary. Racehorse ownership is much more often a business venture than anything else.

Broken legs and other injuries can be fixed, but it takes time and effort and care. And do you even know what laminitis is? It has nothing to do wth a broken leg.

Do you know what Laminitis is DD ??
Whilst I agree Horseracing is a business the owners, trainers and jockeys have an affection for their animals and because of the game they're in they treat these animals better than some human beings.
As said my info comes from my horse racing friends, I have no reason to disbelieve them they know the game inside out. Laminitis affects the hoofs IIRC, usually if the horse is prone and cannot walk, or bearing it's weight on one side, especially racehorses who are used to regular movement, Google it I'm sure you'll find something, a little research would have helped you in your initial post.
Granted it's not cheap to fix a broken leg but it's because in the main you can't get a horse to lie down for 6 weeks straight, it's natural instinct is to get up and wander about. Many owners have tried to save horses from broken legs but it rarely happens as they attempt to get up and re break the leg and end up in more distress.

Wow that's a little fiesty, but I'll bite as you're having a quiet day and obviously looking to get a reaction.

Although I'll not bother googling Laminitus, thanks, having owned horses for many years now, and dealt with it first hand

Broken leg equals dead horse. You cant keep them off it when they have it set if you sling them then it puts pressure on their hearts equals dead horse.
Do you think they would put a successful racer down when it could earn millions at stud if they could fix a broken leg?

Can you believe 484,000 were sent to their deaths in WW1 and after the war ends we sold off 28,000 for food, 44 years before Findus ever got the notion...

They no doubt went with the thought "the idea isn't to die for your country - it's to make the other horse die for his".
