Porsche 911 - Everyday car?
#31
my '78 sc was a 5 speed and fuel injected, i think it was just the turbos were 4 speed.
There is a good book by Peter Morgan called Original 911 which goes through all models and specs. Good for homework if you are thinking of buying one.
By the way, mine never overheated but the cabin got bl**dy hot in summer (small and lots of glass)

Any Porkers with the 915 upwards gearboxes (915, G50.....) have five gears apart from the Turbo models. Best bet for a everyday 911 would be the Bullet proof SC model or the 993, depends on how much cash you have. I run a 911s, with a huge wiggly ***!!!
Check out www.pelicanparts.com great 911 BBS on there.

Cheers for all the reply's peeps. Tis much appreciated.
I guess it comes down to the heart ruling the head or vice versa.
I don't have a problem with the car, the servicing/running costs. My biggest concern and remains so, is the miles I do and the liklihood of something going bang in a large way. I want something that is reliable and not going to cost me a fortune in parts etc.
If I could be pretty sure on that front, I am off to get one!!

One way to avoid a large bill - get the car inspected by an official porsche centre, this will cost about £150 and will turn up any problems that need fixing. If the car passes the inspection, you can take out a warranty as long as it is less than 15 years old and doesn't have very large mileage (I think the limit is about 120k). I think it costs about £800 for 1 years warranty - expensive, but it gives peace of mind in case something major goes bang.
Oh, and why not go for a test drive in a 968CS - apart from not having a flat six, it is IMO just as much fun to drive as a 911, cheaper to buy and run, and handles superbly.
