Funny how neither myself nor Turbohot noted any racist element to the original post yet you seemed to find one. I wonder why that might be

As for all your hard man talk I hope karma does its thing

Admirable defence. But you know as well as i do that some builders are thick as $hit and their work reflects this. You only have to listen to some of the conversations on my train in the morning between your brethren to realise there's a lot of bodging going on, and that's on sites in London, top contractors the lot.

I't not just builders, i find most of the trades are littered with knuckle dragging retards, that's why DIY is so popular, i'd sooner bodge it myself than pay for the privilege of having someone do it for me.

there is probably a sarky reply regarding that comment

along the lines of

"well i havn't noticed a building collapse in London but seem to recall a Banking one"

but I suspect builders are too thick to make it

(that looks like a double alienation post)

This thread has just reminded me of how much it is a nightmare to get any house renovation work done by any of the trades.

Used to be a doddle when my Dad was alive as he was a builder and knew the right guys and could put them in their place, but these days I'm on my own. Up until this point I've done most stuff DIY, but now I have too much stuff on I've conceeded to get some of the trades in.

I know one rule; if you want the job done right, DO NOT tell them how to do their job. But steer conversation and planning in such a manner that they come up with a brilliant idea which if guided right will be what you actually want in the first place!

I spent an hour with a plumber last night doing just that! (unvented cylinder, mains 25mm feed, and 2 heating zones)

Add a few "innits", swear words, be a bit matey and make a cuppa for them, and with any luck the job will be half OK.

I remember being in the building, once a brickie on a building site near Daventry came up to me and asked if i got a sister,i replied yes why you asking,he said do you have a rummage in her draws and sniff her knickers,i just laughed and said get the **** out of my sight.
Got out of it because got sick of rushed jobs to get it done on time.
People like my dads dad were proper master builders, long gone these days..

Surprised you didn't lamp him one! In fairness as has already been said not all builders are arseholes just some. As you say the true master builders have gone but the same is true in all walks of life.
The only builder I would use is one of the lads I know locally or Alan Bell off here.

To be honest i was green at the time, had not long left college and it was about my 4th week working on a building site for the first time.
A couple of my mates were working in Cambridge earning a grand a week back in 1998...

Todays example of impressive scumminess (Not builders this time) was in Failsworth going to my Grandparents, a young lad talking on his phone with a Staff in tow, said hound stops and parks its (substantial) breakfasts, owner notices its crime and carries on his phonecall, completely ignoring the huge turd his pet had left, right in front of someones door, the houeses were 2 up 2 down and the front door opens right onto the pavement, right onto Tysons breakfast.

We used to live in such a polite and helpful society. Even the builders were friendly.
