This is one of them items that garages rarely replace or tell you that they did?
For the price of them it's worth to replace annually, also keeps the heater matrix clean.
What I do is put the date on all replaceable service items, filters etc so I know when they was last replaced, or keep a log. Bit OCD but that me!

just wanted to thank K3ogh_sti for this thread - after seeing it I bought a new filter from ebay (£5!) and fitted it this morning in about 10mins. Pretty shocked at the crap in the old one, there was about a cm of dust in each groove along with lots of small leaves and twigs... ew!
