Cool

Technically, I am a geek. But have you seen the rates that some of these geeks get paid these days?

Father_jack.
If you are going to buy XP, do what I did. Pop down to the scan todayonly stall and get an OEM copy. You just have to buy some other hardware at the same time... like a mouse

Cheers Deference - that sounds like a top scam

I can claim it back anyway, just don't like the idea of giving Uncle Bill another £200 to wipe his @rse with.

I apologise, you're quite correct, perhaps he's more like this:

You know, I find it intensely irritating when a relatively serious thread has to detract like this, due to the likes of ME.

Its a good job MarkO is a top bloke.

Software piracy? I can't condone that. It would be disgraceful behaviour, especially coming from a software developer whose livelihood is likely to be directly - and adversely - affected by such behaviour.

In the comparisson here. Point 3 swung it for me - the ability to encrypt sensitive data - like those educational films I've downloaded Never mind protecting the kids from the internet - I've got to protect them from me

I got mine from Dabs with a £50 cashback offer on Pro - the difference was only £30 anyway.

I've gone through the whole lot...
Win311, Win 95, Win98 (+SE), Win Me, Win Nt 3.5, Win 2k and now Win XP.
Win XP is by far the best. More stable than the old 9x series as it now uses the kernels (codes/instruction set) from Windows 2000 (or some of it anyway!)
I build Pc's in my spare time, when out of the Scoob, and now wouldn't install anything but XP.
It usually finds all the drivers form its own massive database on installation. Anything else you can load off the internet (unless it's your modem drivers at fault!)
XP also has the facility to go back to a safe point (restore) should you have problems, just like Win Me only better and more reliable.
I play tons of the latest games, use office, build web sites and haven't had a problem with XP.
To be really safe I would install XP then install GoBack (by Roxio) as this is a much better, safer, more reliable, restore than XP's (or Me's).

The spec of your PC is easily good enough to fly with XP.
XP also has a neat trick if you are having problems running games or programs that seem in compatible. All you do is right click the shortcut, select advanced and compatibility, then select any of the older operating systems, such as Win98, Me, win2k and it will simulate the environment to allow the program/game to run...excellent..

I used to re-format and reload 98 and Me all the time due to "blue screens of death", but not any more with XP.

I agree with all the previous about reformatting and starting again.

With the XP CD, set the bios to boot from CD first and Hard Drive second, stick the CD in and re-boot...you will go straight into installation of XP, from where you can re-format the drive and even change from the old system (FAT 32) to NTFS which is meant to be much more efficient and stable.

I leave all my PC's in FAT32, so if you network to another older PC it can read your files, otherwise it won't see the NTFS drive.
