40+40x0+1=?
That's becuase the calculator isn't able to sort out operator precedence, you enter it linearly and it just performs the operations in the order you enter them.

...or, alternatively, to learn the limitations of the one you already have. Two wrongs don't make a right, and in this case the two wrongs are
a) you've not understood and taken into account the precedence of the mathematical operators, and
b) nor has your calculator.
Not that it makes the slightest difference, but my scientific calculator gets this one right, and so does even the iphone.

In a primary school, give that to some young kids and see what they make of it

So I just added up the sum as I saw it 40+40=80 x 0 =80 + 1 = 81.
Guess I'm crap at maths
the issue here is people presume brackets are involved, and they are not it seems
