Got limited interweb at the mo so not checked in here for a while. What a treat.

Beautiful taste and attention to detail Si. You're doing the superb job I knew you would, I can't wait to see her put back together. This to me is so much more exciting than just a big engine build.

It's a proper resto, something you simply don't see in the Subaru marque.

have you taken the shields off and inspected the pipes underneath? the up-pipes are prone to blow on the flexy.

I've only taken the shield off the headers, I know the down pipe as it came off my old classic and its been dry stored for what must be 6-7 years now so that's ok and I've had a real close look at the up pipe and it looks quite good to me no visible damage so I'm going to go with it

What a hot day to be outside in the sun... Cleaning the engine and I'm cooked !

Firstly called in the see the shell, there's a small fix needed part way down the one sill on the drivers side due to finding a little rust but nothing major at all... Craig has a car in the booth which he is painting today which is a Type R but not off here as far as I know then I'm next.

The shell has a gallon of etch primer on it and we looked at the finish lines to take the stone chip to as that's going on next then we are ready for the paint process at last

You can just see where the sill is being worked on below.

A major difference to where its come from I think....

To this....

I'm still not thinking about it all to much just going with the flow lol

Bunged all the water ingress points ready for de greasing and hosing down...

I need a metal kidney plate instead of this plastic one now....

And after a few hours with a toothbrush !

It may not look like it but there was 18 years of oil build up on there, probably did me a favour as it kept the alloy under it in good condition.

I'm cooked that's me done for today.... A van full in the morning for the trip back up is the next job

A small update stone chip followed by paint starting next week so the shell is in final stages, I'll have a few pictures to go back in time with then when I get my camera back.

I was hopefull to have the electro plated nuts and bolts back by now but it's taking a little longer than I had expected so another week or so realistically on those yet.

With both bumpers being painted as well I picked up a few more rusty parts today to work on.....

Lets see what I can make of those when I clean them back, there's a few bolts snapped off so I will take them into work for drilling out and re tapping next week and hopefully I will be able to re use them ok.

Also a big thank you to Alyn at A.S. Performance for supplying a nice box full of parts Friday, some nice uprated bushes plus the main crank seal and new "O" rings for the rear diff plus a few other bits an bobs.... Really nice to be able to do business with someone that understands my requirements and is able to assist as well as supply the items that are needed for this project.

I've also got to add a small story about a part that had become my nemesis... That being a "grommet" in particular the bulkhead one that the air con pipes go through, this one item without a doubt has taken more time and effort locating than any other part of the car, mine had a knife cut through it so after talking to a couple of breakers no joy, the main dealer.... Chassis number, import.... We will get back to you... (Cough) finally ordered a new one from Japan on a two month lead time... Nearly 6 weeks go by and it's still a two month lead time... Then I dropped a wanted in here and one member had one with slight damage to it if I needed it... Thanks to super ted. I also completely forgot the fact Stu 53 had a shell on his driveway he broke and scrapped with the grommet in place as it got dragged off... But I then decided to try for a good one a final time and Alyn advised I try HDC Subaru, baring in mind I have owned a Subaru over 10 years I had not even heard of these guys and they had been in business 20 years !

Well what a saga lol anyway spoke with June at HDC Subaru and e mailed a picture, later that day June replied and said Howard knows he has one as he remembers seeing it but he can't find it... Bare with us we will carry on looking was the reply, then the following day still no joy but Howard's not giving up he knows he has one somewhere... Then a day later yes Howard has found it and it's in the post, what fantastic service then yesterday it arrives in a envelope in great condition. Baring in mind now I will add I have never done any business with HDC before and how easy it would be to say sorry don't have one I really cannot say anything other than praise for them to spend all that time looking for an item for a stranger (me) and something only worth peanuts in reality.

So a massive thanks to HDC from me for what seems like such a small thing but as said it was my nemeses and I was not going to be beat by it !

Frayz has "The Bomber" and I have "The Grommet" lol

Anyway just wanted to share a few things this week showing the up's and downs of restoring a car... I've still got a long road in front of me yet !

Oh I've also found a really nice later interior and will be collecting that next week as well.

Simon.

I'll get the snapped bolts out tomorrow then get a few top coats on to finish, even though these are out of sight it's good to know they have fresh paint on them as well.

Indeed I am lol about to head back up there now after freeing the snapped bolts off earlier and tapping the threads to clean them up, dropped a few bolts back in there for when I slap a load of paint on them as not to clog them up.

Still chipping away here

Lightly ported more as a clean and freshen up and then cut the lugs off etc, then I'll wrap them over the weekend.

Then I've got the top mount on the go as well...

De greased and a quick polish back to remove 18 years of scab....

Also picked up a fantastic condition interior last night, I've been looking for a drivers seat for mine without success and these popped up and even though they my not be the correct year I'm willing to compromise as they are great seats.... I will continue to keep an eye open to complete my OEM set them they will go into storage for another day.

That's ok I knew the seats would go both ways with people, it's difficult these days to find quality seats when you consider classics are 13 - 19 years old so you just have to do the best you can with that in mind

I was forgetting I managed to rescue the fog light cover brackets ok, I re tapped the threaded holes as well so the fixings will drop in nice and easy, they may not look new but the structure is solid still.

Etched primed ready for finish coat tomorrow.

Tell me about it, the seats i've inherited have gloss on the shoulder
As for the fog light brackets, they're unseen and protected

Cracking stuff as usual.

Seats as plentiful but good seats are rare that's where we are now with the age of these cars, have you by chance a picture on how these brackets go together as the painter took them off and I'm baffled

Just taken this pic if it helps....

The bracket the other side will only fit one way iirc, when I resprayed mine I had to use the actual covers to hold them to the bumper.

Great that's brilliant I think I understand now, the one plate is behind the bumper and the other then on the front which the cover bolts onto, I think that answers the question.

A productive morning here... Wrapping the headers !

God what a job that's tested me out, that out of everything I have done to date got my blood pressure up more, maybe I'm to fussy I don't know but even though I'm not 100% happy with the results I know that's the best I can do, I should of had more than enough but after starting turbo end I think I used a little more than I could of and this resulted in a tight finish... If I had a couple more feet of wrap I could have finished a lot better but I made it that's the main thing.

Cable ties.... Yes I know they are plastic but that's just simply to hold things in place as Andy has the steel wire and gadget to wire them up properly so they will be finished off at Ace.

A very hot greenhouse has speeded up the paint drying so I finished the top mount off and re assembled it.... Need to replace the cap head bolts with Dome headed ones when I get a few off eBay.

And finally some new parts at long last.... These should help with the suspension and handling of the car really well.

Group N engine and gearbox mounts.

Dimensions recieved that's brilliant more than I as expecting in detail, I can work with that perfectly

The fins were challenging.... Lots bent over completely and then a few ok and then areas were the top level was missing so after I started to try to level them many snapped off in the end I did all I could and that was to strip that top layer off fully which opened up all the fins and channels for air flow. That was the best thing I could do Stu with it as it stood.
