I find it's the posh rich boys whos parents buy them a car that are the worst young drivers, not the ones who work their ***** off to buy their pride and joy! Oh and the middle ages w@nks driving the repmobiles doing 100mph on the motorways driving like complete C U Next Tuesdays!

Truth is that the kiddies couldn't drive the cars of my youth .... fact.

You needed to be a skilled driver of a Ford Capri, with rear wheel drive and cross-ply tyres, on ice, no PAS, no AWD, no ALBrakes, no airbags, no electronic trickery .... you either learned how to drive properly - or you died trying.

No-one under 30 have the skills of the old people who drove by the seat of their pants every single day - driving these days is really designed for Cissies and Pansies.

 

Yea the cars are easier and safer to drive today so why should no one under 30 be driving them u fool

I do understand there are some young drivers out there that need to calm it down, As there is a time and place for everything,But its not fair to say every one under 30 is a bad driver.

I am 22 myself and own a Type R I worked hard for it so respect it on road, I do occasionally wear a "cap" So don't judge all young people for being bad drivers if there in a Subaru as not every one starts off with Saxos or Corsas

I have seen a handful of bad mature drivers on road but they do say reactions get slower with AGE.

 

thats not really a fact though is it pete? the older cars were so much more unsafe, and did you fck need to be skilled to drive a capri lol , and there were fck all other cars to crash into at that time

still most newer drivers dont have AWD unless rich/lucky. and fortunately now our roads should be safer due to some simple driving aids. whats the point in boasting about being able to almost be incontrol of an unsafe vehilce - where its 50/50 if you can keep it on the road.

that said - i think driving tuition should go much further than it does just now for learners, and also older drivers should have to resit a competency test at a certain age, 60-65 maybe?

 

Please state what Capri came with cross-ply tyres as I am almost positive they all had radial tyres fitted even in 1969 at their launch. I have owned loads of RWD Fords from the 70s and never had one with cross-ply tyres.

Cross-ply tyres luxury, I remember having solid rubber tyres and a guy walking in front of me at the giddy speed of 3 mph waving a flag you would not have the skill to drive my Stanley Steamer. Does this sound familiar ?.

Good drivers don't boast they adapt to the car, conditions and their skill, go beyond the limits of any of the three and you will be a bad driver, sex and age don't come into it.

 

My folks sold me their mk2 Golf GTI cheap when I was 22. At the time I just didn't think I was a good enough driver so did the IAM course which helped a bit.

What should be banned is dads driving on their own in MPVs. There is no class of driver more bitter, more angry, more keen to show his people carrier is actually a sports car. Utterly lethal.

 

you think?, not really my impression, its generally just a broad culture of paying less attention at the wheel than any age/sex of the driver. obv exceptions both ways.

It may have been my Ford Cortina, Zephyr or Zodiac which had Cross-plys? But, I did think my Capri had them too? Old age plays tricks with ones memory!

I do not dispute that driving back in my day was extremely dangerous - that's why we either became superb drivers or died.

I can guarantee that any kiddie under 30 - maybe even 40 - would crap themselves if put behind the wheel of a 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's car. They would certainly crash within yards ......... hence my comment that they cannot *REALLY* drive.

 

yeah both extremities are undesirable, but i do see much more lack of confidence than over confidence tbh.

 

im 23 and bet i have more driving experience than most of you combined. Dont tar us all with the same brush. And yes when im in the scoob, i drive hard, brake late and generally use the car as it was meant to be used within legal limits. Doesnt mean i dont know how to handle it.... And i take it to a track or drag day to really give it abuse...

 

Always watch the ones that claim to be great drivers...

Are those F1 drivers any good on public roads? Who knows? Have you had far more driving experience than most of us? Who knows? Does late braking make you a good driver?

I'm simply questioning the implied self assumption that you are a good driver on public roads.

The best drivers I know are quietly confident, very observant and usually fairly experienced; some are young and gifted , some are over 60.

 

Ive driven 100k + miles a year since the age of 17, i drive all day every day, along with numerous track days, drag events etc, and IAM courses. I own numerous performance cars and have worked extremely hard to pay for and have them.

So yes, I drive far more and have more qualifications than your average driver. actually.

 

Not saying that isnt true, what i am saying is that you cant tar everyone with the same brush of been under 30 then driving like a tool, when i take my cars and driving very seriously.

You mention qualifications; did you pass the IAM test? Any other actual qualifications? Drag racing doesn't really count nor does owning a few quick cars...

 

Yes passed the iam test, I dont just drag race, track days etc, and am hill climbing next year. Every car has been bought tuned and used as it has meant to be used. We arent all bad drivers, driving like a complete ****** isnt just reserved for under 30s

 

I've not said under 30s are bad drivers. I'd say that under 20s are simply due to lack of experience.

Anyway, whatever age anyone is, it's always good to see fellow enthusiasts. Did my IAM test at 22, cop training soon after. Still make far too many mistakes.
