Corsa VXR
#31
Well 3 weeks down the line and i'm not enjoying the Corsa
few rattles/ creaks, not as quick in a straight line as i'd hoped, steering quite heavy at low speeds, harsh ride over crappy yorkshire roads.
I've been offered a Clio 200 with Cup pack for a little more money, slightly lower miles but couple of months older, factory sat nav and that's it (i think).
Will the Clio be less harsh on the bumps? will it have less rattles/creaks? which is worth more? (VXR - 10 plate - 32k Vs Clio 59 plate, 26k)

I did warn you a few posts back, before you bought the Corsa VXR, that it might disappoint you in your expectations power wise compared to your previous turbo cars!
I’ve owned the Corsa VXR and test driven the 200 Cup and I don’t think there’s an awful lot between them, if anything you have to work at the Clio more to get it going and its not going to be hugely different over the Corsa in straight line speed.
Also, remember that the Cup is biased for the track, so I don’t think it will be the answer to a better ride quality on your Yorkshire roads either.
I think the build quality is pretty much the same, so don’t expect the creaks to disappear with a Renault!!
Both very good cars in their own right and excellent on the right road/track, but in the grand scheme of performance cars available they are quite similar and I don’t think one will be a revelation over the other.

well outright speed and race like handling isn't too important as i only drive the car to work and back (8 miles each way) but i do like a nice looking car with a few extras over a basic model. The VXR looks totally different to a 1.2 and has great Recaros, etc and the Clio has the flared front wings, Brembos, etc.
I think the Clio with a spoiler looks discreet but sporty, the interior is a bit basic and power wise it should be ok, i'm just worried it'll be as harsh as the VXR to drive?
It is the FF version with the Cup pack so has different suspension to standard - does this mean stiffer as well as lower?

Whats the overall budget?
Also referring back to your initial post do you still think that the VXRs are better built than the Ford STs as Ive only ever been impressed with Ford build quality.

Car must ideally be less than 3 years old (4 if it's very low miles and mint)
I had a pre facelift 2006 ST2 with DS remap, it was quick but thirsty (22mpg) which is 1 of the reasons i got rid. I want something which will give 30+mpg, comfortable ride, no rattles/ creaks, be sporty looking, nippy and not depreciate too quickly - is there such a car?
The Focus did have some rattles, Ford plastics aren't the best but they are reliable.
The astra VXR i had was way better in the build quality than the Corsa VXR - no rattles at all, a lot quieter drive and smoother - shame about the 23mpg (Corsa is giving 32mpg around town)

I work for vauxhall and the corsa vxr are not the best tbh, suffer from gearbox problems, piston 4 problems, wheel bearings ect
have you thought of the vectra VXR if you like your vauxhall`s

A little older now but '08 models occasionally come up for around £9500. I have one and although it has had some reliability issues now everything works fine I cant think of another car that meets my needs that I would rather have. Its getting remapped next Saturday to around 225bhp.

Clio 200s with the Cup pack ride as hard as hell, which is why I didn't go for it. Had mine nearly two years now and it's been faultless, so would highly recommend one, with one caveat; being normally aspirated, it doesn't feel that quick.
Mine is going in Jan, two years old and 10k miles, will be worth about £10k.

To change from the 2010 VXR to this 59plate clio is an extra £250 from a trader - most other dealers i got prices from wanted £1k at least for similar cars so i don't think i've done too bad?
Gonna miss a turbo again but guess i wont when the snow arrives

Well it works out i'm getting £9250 for the Corsa in p/x - similar on ebay are going for £8k - £9k and i prefer to trade so i'm not without a car between swaps and no timewasters

Picked it up today
Feels just as nippy mid range/ on motorway as the Corsa, thought it would feel slower without a turbo?
Comfy, quiet, 1 rattle at back (boot catch i think?), more thirsty (32mpg at 70mph compared to 37mpg with Corsa) - nice 80 mile drive home

Looks really nice.Looks more grown up and classier than the VXR if Im honest.
Do you think that the drop in economy is down to the lack of the turbo efficiency?

The Clio looks a lot more subtle apart from the flared arches where the VXR looked as though it had aftermarket bumpers on as they were quite bold?
I guess the mpg is down to bigger engine (2000 vs 1600)? i kept to below 4k so i wasn't thrashing it. Owners are saying they get mid 20s around town which is crazy - hope i get more

I wrote a report on mbukforums after having a 1.5 Blue efficiency B class for a week as a courtesy car allowing me to compare its efficiency to my 2.0 Turbo B class.
The smaller engine needed to be revved like crazy to get anywhere whereas the larger engine with its turbocharger coped much better and was far less stressed at lower down the rev range.
A few days ago I followed this up with this over 12 miles. Conditions were excellent, little traffic, few stop starts but still impressive for a 200bhp petrol family car.
This was the result measured over an equal run of 13 miles. Identical conditions etc.
B160 Blue efficiency - 30.3mpg
B200 Turbo - 31.6mpg
Over the full week driving diverted little from my usual 15 minute, 4 mile commute involving a short motorway section (2 minutes over 2 mile) and very slow moving traffic. The B160 faired better here.
B160 Blue efficiency - 26.2mpg
B200 Turbo - 22mpg
