60 Spitfires to be dug up in Burma

We don't allow gangsta range rovers in my road
Actually it's at the Bentley doctors at the moment seeing how little I can spend to get it through the Mot next month
How's the shed coming on?

must agree, personally knowing nothing of the "great war" i still love these aircraft. i know little of there role or effect but i still admire them.
never seen one fly in the flesh but truly would like to at some point. IC engines powered these, right? still admire the ability back then to overcome fuelling issues i could see presenting themselves.
but its probably there look/prescence i admire most. hope they are salvageable and displayed again to the public.

During the last few days the mass media has got hold of the story.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-20532791
A clever bit of publicity to get funding and/or filming rights?
Roll on next year when the digging starts.

Some years ago I was given the chance to fly the Rolls Royce Spitfire when their pilot used to visit our airfield. The next time he arrived was going to be the day! Unfortunately suddenly changing events made it impossible for him to visit us again so I lost the chance .I still grind my teeth when I think about the way things turned out. It was always my ambition to fly one.
It occurred to me that with some 60 or so about to be dug up, the price will drop to something that Pete Lewis could easily afford. When you do that Pete, if you get it converted to a two seater dual control, I'll teach you to fly it including all the aerobatics for nothing. I can't say fairer than that now!

Well, two actually; he's trying to make a good one from the two, plus various other parts salvaged from across europe.
I'd post some pics, but to be honest all you can see is twisted piles of scrap metal.

I am fascinated how folk turn wrecks into pristine examples of engineering.
Just look at what happened to the old steam locos from Barry scrapyard, now there's another interesting subject.

quite excited to see what they get myself, after all those years buried - some say the oxygen content would be quite low if buired deep and moisture minimal if crates are good meaning less chance of corrossion.
ive got to get to an airshow at some point - just everyone i see seems to have some tradgic event at it, we provide fore cover at a local show up here on occassiion, cant remeber the name of the place or if its likely to have anything that spectacular at it, if it does i really need to get some tickets

yeah, thats either gonna be good or bad. if it was submerged with limited oxygen could have preserved it well, if water level was going up and down, its gona be very bad.

I have lost count of the number of air displays I have participated in over a good few years, but can only remember the one where John Derry and his crewman were killed in that awful crash at the Farnborough air show when his DH 110 broke up at the start of a low level high speed run, I was very young at the time before I had joined the "Mob", and also the one where a German F104 pilot lost control on final turn at Yeovilton trying to do a very tight final turn. Not the sort of thing to do in a 104 believe me! What wings it has got won't put up with that sort of thing!
We were not allowed to do any manoevres over the spectators and all flypasts etc had to be a minimum of 1500 feet away from the crowd. Any naughty behaviour would lead to a very comprehensive bollocking from the display organiser.
