I'm going 2.1 and he's been massively helpful. Get an engine in, get back on the road then look for mods to get you to 350BHP. These gearboxes are rumoured to be able to cope at this level...

Bigsinky would u say go 2.5 and 350hp is sensible. with vf34 turbo and re map

 

Mate a 2.1 will be 3k min
A 2.5 will be 5 k
The best engine Subaru made good for over 450 hp 1.5 k
The torque on a 2.5 at 350 plus hp will ruin your gb

 

Bigsinky would u say a 2.5 would be ok for 350bhp ? or 2.1 350hp with the option off going bigger later? would both engines need 6 speed to go bigger . The guy has said for my budget 2.5 is the way but am i restricted? need a build that will last and not need much further work.

it all depends on what you want to spend. as I said before, a fully forged engine is not going to be cheap. the 2.1 build parts from lateral are £1800. you will then need the right turbo and injectors. a new ecu to run it plus mapping. don't forget all the incidentals. new plugs, new timing belt, modine, oil pump, FPR, seals, gaskets, oil.

Reliability is the thing here. if you want to future proof yourself then you are going to need a six speed gearbox at some stage. you could drive like a granny with a 5 speed and nurse it but with 350 or more you are on borrowed time.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but classic subarus are just money pits when it come to a new forged engine and rebuilds. It would be remiss of us to tell you that it can be done on the cheap, trust me it can't.

A lot of tuners are getting fantastic results with the 2.1 strokers so speak to engine builders who have done 100s of these engines. listen to their advice. for most of the well respected subaru tuners on here it is a passion not just a business so they will go out of their way to ensure you get the car YOU want. They will also not fill your head full of crap saying you need this, you need that. they will work with you and your budget to get the most out of your parts and your conversion. speak to alan @ enginetuner, david@api or mark@lateral who will all give you sound advice because they have done this 100s if not 1000s of times.

 

slightly misleading here. the 2.2 closed deck block stroked to 2.35 is the block of choice for high power builds but is very expensive. the £1.5K you quote is for the bare block only. if you can find any of course.

 

The P1 gearbox is pretty strong and capable of handling upto 400bhp as long it's not getting launched and is treaded with a bit of care If funds are the limiting factor regarding the rebuild then I would go for a newage 2.0 sti engine from a reliable source and just keep the power around the 360-370 mark for peace of mind. If you are adamant on fitting a failure prone 2.5 sti lump then I would say check out the one for sale at the moment from Pricey- this engine has just been removed from a low mileage car that was looked after properly by the previous owner 53 on here

 

Why don't u go 2.0 closed deck block did u buy the car from midlands m8? How much did u pay for it I'm gutted for u m8 real kick in the teeth

Because with his gearbox restriction there is no point, and if you are buying the correct internals you are aswell going 2.1

 

I am not going to go into this but you and I know that 400/400 on a 5 speed regardless of which 5 speed is going to be on borrowed time and to say otherwise is very misleading. the guys out there that say thay have used a 5 speed with 400hp are either driving their car like a granny and nursing the box or have been very very lucky.

If budget is tight then why not go with a newage motor in your P1. Combined with an 18G or 20 and you'll have a very strong engine that will make good power. Your 5 speed 'should' be fine at this level with a little sympathy.
Don't get me wrong, if budget allows then a 2.1 is the way forward, I'd be speaking to Mark at Lateral only.

 

You are! , you are! . No argument from me. AND to further blow smoke up yer bum; You're dead right about P1 boxes. They would/ could take 400 /400 a while back, BUT unless you go and buy a new one from IM you will be working with a bit of kit that is at least 11 years old.

Metal fatigue and wear and tear - no matter the mileage on the dial will take their toll and we state that 350 is a more realistic hp target these days.

As well as the age you just don't know how the car has been driven previously, even Harvey puts the disclaimer in that if "driven sensibly" they'll be ok.

The engine has already let go ...... might be the sign of a rather hard life!

Assume the worst (and prepare for the expense) and hope for the best would be my advice.

So when you ' slap the Sti 8/9 engine in ' how do you make the VVTi cams work ?

Please take care when talking to newbies about stuff like that, "slapping a Vers 8 / 9 sti engine in " is probably a professional job rather than a homer and a new computer will be needed to make the cams come alive together with a pile of wiring. OR, it will perform like a non turbo.
