Be honest , how many people see a Honda civic and take a second look and think ... Ooo I want one. Answer = nobody?
It's an ok car but that's all. It does it's job and that's that.
You can not put it in the same league as an Impreza !
You buy the Civic to be cost effective and you buy an Impreza purely for performance.
Two completely different cars.
Please stop trying to justify it. Lol!

How many Subaru Impreza STi's sold last year in the UK?
178
I think you will agree that the Civic wins over MANY, MANY more admirers than the Impreza.

You don't dispute the 178 Impreza STi's then?
The point is simple ..... many, many, many, more people found the Civic a better new buy - a better used buy - just a better bet all round ........

It's **** loads cheaper and a more cost effective daily driver, of course they will sell more. Hondas are good cars but I still stress you can't compare them for loads of reasons.

Pete, how long have you had your diesel?
What sort of driving do you do in your diesel? (town/motorway/A road etc)
How many miles on average do you do in your diesel? (per annum)
Do you know the cost of the 2.2 (Diesel) top of the range Honda Civic is less than 1k off the price of the STI they are advertising?

I had an Impreza for more than 10 years, bought from new and respected all through - it was a thoroughly fantastic experience.
The Honda gives me as many smiles per mile as the Impreza did ..... but, it is such a better financial option. And that's why Subaru cannot sell Impreza's and Honda sell shed loads of Civics.

You can compare running costs but if you were concerned about running costs then you would not be contemplating an Impreza .
Plain and simple the Honda is bought mainly for economy ?
Correct ?

You dont need a diesel Pete, Spirited driving for you is 25mph in town you didnt even use spirited driving in your Impreza
Basically you have thrown a shed load of cash down the drain buying a car that you didnt need and fell into the "Diesel is much better for me" trap when you would have done better with a 1.4 or a hybrid.

I took out a whole host of cars from Audi S4's to Vrs Octavia's, from Mazda 6's to Mazda 3 mps's, VXR's and Fords ........
The Honda Civic diesel ticked all the boxes ....... that's why I bought it. It looked better than the others, drove better, was better value.
So, sometimes cars are bought with the heart and head!!

I must admit to diesels being at their end time ....... but, so are petrols ....... we only need one leap in Battery Technology to make the Electric Car the future.
Quite how the Government will tax the elctric is yet to be sorted out .... I'm guessing they will tax the Batteries.

Oddly enough, mine is a rather special looking example, so it gets plenty of admiring looks.
I'm guessing that people look at yours because it is chavved up in some way? Maybe stickered up? with a loud exhaust? Dump Valve maybe? Blacked out windows you say? Gold Wheels (MariGolds)?
You do know what they are saying and thinking ....... don't you??
Clue:- it is NOT, "Look at that beautiful Impreza"!!!!!

A guy at work has a 'special' civic aswell, it looks just another middle of the road car to me and i had a go (gutless type R compared to my std Wrx, with no sticker as from factory ). Never understood why its got push button start technology and you have to turn the key first? Sounds like an ebay special :-)

Ok.
Firstly I don't think Pete is trolling in the true sense of the word. His perspective is a bit different as clearly he's moved on in terms of life expectations, etc.....
The Civic sales are for a whole range of cars whereas the STi sales are based on a manafacturer going through a very difficult period. Subaru have clearly focused on the US market and this has lead to bloated, ugly and very un European cars with resultant low sales. Add to that the economy issues and no wonder the value of has plummeted for the STi. But then again it has for all gas guzzlers too.
The Civic is a nice car. Well engineered and reliable. The sales reflect both that and Honda's improved market penetration now we have an aging population.
The Diesel is today's choice for economy and it's easy to convince yourself with Pete's specs that it is a quick car. The figures don't tell the truth and let's face it, we are here because we love the Impreza and it's built to do a different job to the Civic.
The BTCC Civics are also built differently. Lightweight, caged and utterly rigid, they have mega boosted engines, Hewland straight cut sequential gearboxes and of course will be quick. Against a Time attack Impreza? Err, no. It's all a matter of horses for courses.
I drive a turbo diesel sometimes and you do get a shove from the torque, but you row it along on that torque wave and as long as you don't look at the speedo, you do enjoy it. Just don't race and STi as it'll leave you for dead. Geared short and with a 4,000rpm powerband, you really will feel a bit of a slug.
Diesel belongs in turbine engines, and a small petrol turbo eventually will hold sway until all the damn reciprocating anciaent technology is swept away and we get micro turbines to generate our range extending electricity and hydraulic pressures.

If you wanted a decent diesel, have mine, averaging 70mpg, damn, I even managed 83mpg with the aircon on over 200 miles last week and they are far from dead and buried but the smaller engined and turbocharged petrols are making a good comeback, thats where the future is going with hybrid technology, though saying that, you cannot beat a hybrid diesel can you?

[QUOTE=Kennyboyd31;10776611]Honda 0-62. - 8.7 seconds
Top speed 127mph
Bhp 140
With that 0-60 and top speed it won't matter what the peak torque figure is, because the impreza will be long gone and out of sight.
Torque is cheap in this case, but you need to compare like for like, what you did was compare passion fruit with oranges then bought a lemon, and now your left with a bitter taste in your mouth you try and convince us it tastes sweet.

To all those having a dig at the Civic on looks at least it doesn't look like an utter abortion like the current STI!
