thanks for the reply. we thought air lock as they are known for it. with our car it just points to hgf/ head issue.

I was thinking that with mine, where it was rebuilt I thought the head gasket was not fitted correct or damaged on fitting. Just wouldn't want you changing head gasket to just have same problem after. Fingers crossed for you mate

HAD A EVENING ON THE ENGINE. HEADERS OFF, TURBO AND UP PIPE OFF OIL DRAINED OUT WHICH LOOKED GREY AND WATERY.

ORDERED SOME NEW STUDS AND BOLTS FOR THE TURBO AS THEY ARE SEIZED SOLID SO WILL DO THIS THE WEEKEND.

GOTTA SELL MY CLOSED DECK BLOCK BEFORE GETTING TIS OFF TO THE GARAGE.

Water in oil,yea that's not right is it. Be careful with changing heads,I'm sure some are very slightly different in thickness which affects compression stroke. I'm sure you can use different heads but think you have to get the right thickness head gasket to suit.not even sure if piston can hit head if it's wrong. (Pretty sure guy who built mine told me that)

Won't you need to remap if you fit these?

I'm thinking it will need mapping because turbo will spool up quicker with these items and maybe creating more air and therfore more fuel is needed which means Iignition timing etc is affected and if it's not within the tolerances that the ecu can deal with from the readings it gets from sensors then you will probably run lean which is bad!

bit of an update, no suprise really the head gasket has failed. still not sure what to do regarding the heads, think i will stick with original heads and now send these off for testing/checking. i do have two spare set of heads though so could take a chance and use one of them, saving me money if it goes to plan.

funny though as car still passed the head gasket coolant test.

plan is still to get the engine bottom end rebuilt and put back together.

Don't know but I will investigate a little further by trying a little emery cloth. If it came to rebore then just as well use the closed deck block I have and get that done.

Right. My original heads went in for a check over on Thursday and the findings are:
One of them has a minus 2 thou (0.0508 mm) area smack in the middle of the head and bang in between both combustion chambers.

The other has a minus 2 thou ( 0.0508 mm) area alongside both combustion chambers between the chambers and the edge of the head below exhaust ports.

Question is: Is this within recommended tolerances or will they need to be skimmed ?

We will be fitting Victor Reinz tri layered quality head gaskets.

Phew! You gave me a bloody panic attack then! Just been out and emery clothed area. No score marks at all just a bit of a dark shadow left in the bore but no depth at all. Oiled the bores up now as she is still outside but well covered. I will be getting her off to garage soon.

Coolant test checks for exhaust gases in water but your head gasket has blown on other side so water is getting in cylinder, probably killing the spark and creeping past piston rings and mixing with oil in bottom of engine

Buy a honing tool that goes in a drill to polish up cylinder nice! Only cheap on ebay. Its like a spring loaded tripod with polishing stones attached, put it in drill,a bit of lube and away you go

Cheers guys. My engineer just skimmed heads for us did a lovely job on them too. When we collected them we had the block in the boot also. He took a look and would not commit himself as to whether or not it would be ok?

Anyway, all bits now with local guy who is very well known in scooby circles for him to decide. Bottom end to be rebuilt, new shells, rings etc.

Got a RC sump baffle plate to go in and an uprated RC oil pump. Then he will collect the car and sling the lump back in. SO FINGERS CROSSED IT IS THEN !

Few pics to go with the weekends work. Along with a better pic of the water mark in one of the bores.

As above don't use this up pipe on yours, this Up pipe is too big and its oversized and can cause slower spool

not much has been happening. took all my heads and parts to a local guy who unfortunately was told by his boss that he was packing the business in. however three weeks from there to present day he has now set up on his own and will be starting work on my block tomorrow. cant wait. plan is to get it running on the road by Christmas. if its November time then even better. will update as and when.

with regards to the marks found in my block the guy has a spare good side for me to have. glad were stripping it now as we wouldn't of known otherwise. basically this guy is rebuilding the block, putting the heads and all other parts back together and fitting it into the car. should have a sound motor then.

last night i also came across a 6k ecu which i will be adding to the car in good time.

Not much of an update but a bit of news.

I did see my engine builder today who said the block is in bits now. Ready for rebuilding.

Bearings were worn with the big ends pretty bad- (we did have a knock on cold so did wonder).

Crank is fine though. The Left side engine has score marks which we knew about but he has a good left side in his garage which he will use for our engine.

Going for Cosworth bearings and standard Subaru rings, just waiting for the order and away to go. Few weeks should be rebuilt and on the road.

I will list a full spec once its all complete. Cant wait now.

Im glad we did strip it now and find these problems (score marks warped head and bearings) the plan at one point was to just change the head gasket, but few thousand miles the engine would of let go im sure.

Just hope when it comes back ill have a sound motor to enjoy for a few years, wont be selling for a while owes me too much, just want to enjoy it now.

Just waiting on my 6k ecu and my hrc fuel pump.

If i get it back before xmas i will be very happy. will update when i know more.

Anyone know for a sti v2 intercooler to complete to tweaks??

Thanks.
