I actually presumed that was written in a sarcastic tone. Just so used to it. It's a bit like the boy who cried wolf, but in F1's case it's the man who screamed '****'.

That doesn't really scan does it? In fact it makes no sense at all. Written in haste, devoid of genuine wit and placing too much emphasis on the desire to use the word **** instead of making the expression actually work. Feel free to try again

Oh Martin, I have LooneyPrangBin on ignore and now I know what he said.... fortunately it wasn't worth reading as usual so no harm done

Seriously though even given my misunderstanding of the situation (caused in no small part by Sky News claiming it cost £80 million this morning) is £80 million not a bit of a waste of money even if it's for 4 ceremonies.

Sure if people want to enjoy the sport then fair enough I guess, but £80 million on ceremonies for a country in the economic doldrums.... sorry, but seems like a complete waste to me

Well we disagree yet again

This is a tiny amount of money for UK PLC to advertise its culture and history for 3.5 hrs to a worldwide audience of billions.

There are many brands that spend 10 times that amount

And apart from that, this is a national celebration, a chance for people to have a knees-up.

This is an absolutely fantastic thing we are about to do

That's as maybe, but it does not need £80million chucking at the ceremonies! As Les, I think, said earlier it's all about trying to outdo the preceding host's ceremony and that is a game we should not be playing!

But Les is wrong, this has nothing to do with 'one-upmanship'. This is about opening the greatest show on earth and putting the UK and London in the spotlight
If it was about out-doing Bejing then we'd of spend £200M on the open ceremony alone.

Sorry Martin, but I do think there is an element of that.

Personally I have no time for the Olympics as it has bene rammed down our throats for months now and I genuinely think the country has far more important issues it shoud dbe addressing than having politicians and other 'important' people distracted by something that will ultimately be nothing more than history in a few weeks time.

Anyway I fear as entrenched as we are we will have to agree to disagree.... let's see what the legacy is in 4 years time then we'll know who's right! Whatever happens let's hope it doesn't end up like Athens 2004!

No, I like comediennes, as it happens. Some of 'em make me crack. But it's very much an ego-fuelled (read man's) arena. Feel sorry for 'em as regard that aspect.

Not all the money for the Olympics is being "wasted" as such though is it? Alot of cash has gone in to the pockets of people working on designing and building the whole event. I know quite a few people involved in it all that have been very glad of the work it's provided in these hard times and are a little sad it's all coming to an end. Although there is still lots of work to be done after the event closes.

But the girls did say that they would wear their tiny cossies if at all possible.

The saucy minxes - they know, they know.

I thought the opening of The Olympics was awesome !.

James Bond, Mr Bean and the Industrial transformation made the show imo.

Yeah me too! Great creativity and execution. It had a great narrative.

+1 on those 3 sections too.

And of course the actual Olympic cauldron - a work of art in every sense. Beautiful.

Looks like LOCOGs 'elitist' ticketing policy has come full circle to bite them on the ****...

The amount of empty seats at a lot of the events today is tragic and sad. And the alleged reason? Many (all?) of said seats were set aside for sponsors, rather than the general public.

Sickening really, the evident, "I don't give a stuff about the games, I just want my bloody millions!", city banker-like attitude of these sponsors.

As has already been argued, this whole corporate whoring bollox goes against the whole ethos of what the games are about.

But then we already new this would prob. happen due to the ticket allocation debacle on the run up to the games. Groan.
