Mate, saw the comments re blob rear lights.
I did this quite some time ago to my old bug - there's a guide I wrote on how to do it here.
You can cut the old bumper but I'd honestly say just go with the blob one - they look better especially if you bung some twisted sideskirts on there, and it's a straight swap - the only thing that you need to remove are the bumper bars under each light.
Best mod I did by far on my bug was the STI headlamps, STI later shape one-piece grille and Prodrive style pack front bumper.
Sadly I don't think the latter were ever made in silver, so you'll have to get one painted but it sounds like you have the right sort of contacts for that
To give you some ideas to play with, I had a UK300 colour coded splitter on my old car before I went Prodrive style, and pretty much documented what I did here - check pages 4 and 3 for photos of the mods as they went on.
Page 2 also shows changing the front bumper, and results post fitting vf35 etc etc.
Hope it's useful

Standard bug lights and bumper
Genuine hawkeye lights on a bug bumper. If you look closely they don't sit properly as the cut out in the bumper is not there
Genuine blob lights with genuine wide track bumper with the cut out so lights sit perfectly
Hope this helps mate

ye i know what u mean matey well i will probably offer them up against the bumper and see how flush they sit if they dont fit well then they dont fit will be just a waiting game till i find a bumper its just weird ive seen several threads on here that people have done it to theirs without to much hassle i wonder why yours was a nightmare?? u think maybe it was cause they were hawk lights??

Everyone says they've put the lights on with no issues which I don't believe I bought the hawk lights which are identical in shape to the blob lights from Rob Day who had them on his bug with bug bumper. He had done the foam etc mod although when I put them onto my car with bug bumper they just wouldt push in far enough and the circle at the bottom wa too proud. Try them mate maybe I just convinced myself they didt fit because I hated the look of them on my car haha

well after doing a bit of research ive got it looking better its not 100% but i think its a big improvement
also fit those lights today as for how they fit tbh the gap against the body is fine exactly the same as the standard ones only thing thats different is they over hang the bumper at the bottom but i cant see there being any issues for leaking there is a good seal between the light cluster and the body so here are some pics
before
during
after
i think its a big improvement and reversing in my garage is so much easier the reversing light is like a torch now lol

The blob lights are a massive improvement in both the looks and performance world - I've left my bug bumper on because the fit isn't bad and I didn't want to try and remove my spats and refit them to a blob bumper
