Syria - I just can't understand
I don't know really if I am brutally honest. I would hope not as I like to think we have learned our lessons after the mess ups in Iraq and Afghanistan..... however one can never rule it out if theire is some political gain to be made ... and Cameron does seem to aspire to be Tony Blair Mk 2 on thw world stage so ... watch this space!

I think Obama backed himself into a corner with his "red line" comment last year in the hope that it would stop Syria from using chemical weapons. Now that line as been crossed, Obama has to be seen as doing something as his credibility is now at stake. Hopefully the military assistance will amount to nothing more that small arms and ammunition. The Syrian rebels have links with Al Qaeda and the last thing the US wants is arming these terrorists with sophisticated rockets, explosives and other deadly devices that might in the future be used against the 'coalition of the willing'.

Load of bollocks, this thread is a great example as to how british society falls for it every time and gets behind the Government for war.
This sort of sh't has been happening for years in Africa however neither the Americans or us Brits have done foook all.
Why.........if you've got half a brain you would of worked it out buy now....OIL.
Some of the reports and victims claim the killers told them that they were Asads men etc....come on, if your doing something that you shouldn't be do you really think your going to tell them who you are. That's like robbing a bank and giving your name to the victims as your on the way out.
No decent person would do that sort of stuff surely? would imagine them to be Mercenaries and I hope they rot in hell and the devil bums them with his 12" c o k. However the blood is on our hands as I believe they are employed by our Governments and the states.

International law is the same as it was before of course and it would indeed be illegal to take Assad out.
I have come to the conclusion however that Assad's treatment of his people is beyond the pale especially using chemical weapons as SH did of course.
One way to consider the matter is...would you stand by and watch some nutter murdering women and children in the street and do nothing about it?
When you think about it, it is a matter of degree and eventually the result goes beyond what can be accepted in a civilised world.
I also have to admit that my personal opinion of Billy Liar and his real reasoning behind allying us with Bush, who was actually only concerned with oil at the time rather than holding genuine altruistic reasons for his actions, went a long way towards colouring my feelings at the time.

I don't believe that helping the rebels will achieve that.
Sadly I don't think there is an answer until Assad is assassinated or dragged screaming to the negotiating table by Russia.
But I would strongly support help for refugees.
And I am glad I sit in a nice armchair and don't have to make these critical choices.

PS. I wonder if Iran's new leader will make any difference?
I think they probably are but any intervention we, or USA, provide has to be intended to end the terrible slaughter irrespective of a few hundred chemical deaths.

Agree about the refugees, but we need a plan as to what comes after if the removal of Assad is seen as the way forward by whatever method. The biggest problem with Iraq is no one had thought about what comes after removing SH... and that is partially why Iraq is not really any better off today!
how come turkey has reported arresting rebels having sarin gas and they are unsure where they got it from yet the US keeps blaming it on the Syrian gov? lol
Also didn't one of the UN people looking into the claims last month say they had concrete suspicions the rebels have used sarin gas. but that report seems to have vanished now?
Also nobody think its weird that now the Syrian gov are regaining control of their country the US is stepping things up and arming the rebels.
Not to mention reports of rebels doing dodgy stuff like killing kids for speaking out or eating solders hearts etc etc
Just remember the people fighting on the govs side are also Syrians fighting for their country. And they out number the rebels by a ton so who is to say the rebels are in the right but the others are not?
And a large number of "rebels" are known terrorist organisations.
i bet 100%, The arms they get from the west will be used on the west at some point. imagine the terrorists getting their hands on the anti aircraft weapons which they will if supplied. passenger jets don't have defenses remember.

Well done. One day when the tables are turned someone will say the same to you. Karma can be a nasty little lady but its always deserved.

It's a lazy argument for people who don't want to think about issue, and/or have axes to grind (I put you in the latter camp)
You don't need to condemn him, he condemns himself with his own words
Well if the UK were to get involved how long will it be before we get the old 'British soldiers are killing our babies' routine. This isn't our war, best to stay well out of this dirty nasty filth, where there will be no winners, only losers.
You have a short memory. You wrote "Just yanks killing one another.Leave them to it".
Does that paint you like a piece of ****?
The answer to Why Syria is Fighting is complex. The Assad family has ruled Syria for fifty years on behalf of a Shiite minority as a monarchy in all but name. When the "Arab Spring" series of peaceful revolts against Muslim dictators swept through North Africa, it resonated in the minds of most Syrians, who as Sunnis do not share the ethnic or religious identity of the small clique that rules the nation.
Unlike the UK................................................ ....................(2005 and 2010)

However what i did not write 'personally, i don't care how many Americans are dying', if i did so then by all means you could claim the whole 'hypocrite' clap trap which whilst clearly failing at least you are making some sort of attempt.
Better luck next time.

I agree and yes, if the UK gets involved there will be innocent blood on our soldiers hands again.
Nope, to those of the ilk that will stalk my threads they will see me as a piece of ****. Likewise i will hold a similar opinion about them too.

A real shame on you.
How can you have a stalker when you iz infidil innit

Anyway things are getting more serious now.
Iran is sending 4000 troops to help the brothers.
UK has sent 350 army type guys to train in Jordan for something.
Blair was looking all maniacal and "sincere" at the same time (which is impressive) and was wittering on about WMD, threat to the west etc etc
And you could see Putin just standing there, next to Blair, thinking, this guy is talking bollox – his face was a picture of contempt for Blair
