i am 5.10 and 15 ish stone and every year in the army they said i was obese by my bmi reading.if i was the 11 stone they reckon i should be i would look ill.
you get to an age where the belly doesnt really go ( im 40 this year ).i just eat properly,run couple times a week and just starting mountain biking again.i normally lose a couple of inches on waist etc but weight stays the same.

Absolutely, was "weighing" it up earlier, say I am 50 pounds overweight and a pound of fat takes 3500 extra calories to appear, that is 175,000 unburnt calories.

A Mars Bar, which I never eat but is a good example is 294 Calories, so that's like 595 days where I have eaten the equivalent additional calories compared to what I have used, shows how easy it is, that is just like having a pudding after your tea or not.

Thing is, putting it on requires no concentration, thought or calorie counting, your body just adds it all up for you and plonks it, badly distributed across your body.

a 70 day hunger strike (0 calories, most die before then)
or
218 days with a net Calorie deficit of 800
or
1 year of net deficit of 479 Calories a day

I have a Basal Metabolic rate of 2166 calories according to a random website, basically what you burn to stay alive before you do any exercise, activity or whatever, the app says work to 1600 to lose 2 pounds a week, guess it does the same kinds of calculation.

Can see how things get much faster when you throw exercise in, but then it is easy to end up eating more to compensate rather than burning what is there.

I am hungry right now, it is a novel feeling, usually I have reached for the Crisps by now, being hungry for a bit wont kill you, think we are terrified of it, like a bit of rain stops people cycling when in actual fact it isnt that bad.

just down loaded. i am such a fat bastid now. 125kg and only 178cm. holy ****. have to say i didn't have much faith in the food counter. i stuck in "sausage bap" for breakfast and it actually found one from a van it even had irn bru ffs

half my calories gone for today.

Yeah, the BMI thing is a bit simplistic, I bet Jef rates as obese despite being a wall of muscle, and it has to be said a few ounces of brain as well

However it is easy to try and justify weight based on being big boned, stocky or whatever but most people are actually just overweight, if I get to 13 stone I will be just inside the OK category, according to the charts I should be 11.5/12 stone.

Get used to feeling hungry.

I still need to lose half a stone to get back where I was, but I'm not quite as focussed as I was. I've banged out 30 hilly miles today, so feel it's only right to go to the pub with family and have burger, chips and a few pints of ale!

eating has a host of other effects also though. can positivley affect moods ect, also becomes a habit, ect and thus its soo easy to put fat on.

it sounds like a massive amount of kcals but over time its not that much over your maintenace, and the important thing is -time.
it takes time to go on, and same for it to go.
add to that everyones different resting metabolic rate, how eating at certain times can influence fat loss/gain - and what the food choices are, also the goal posts change for your body, as you get older also, lol so many factors can influence things.

tends to be why fat loss is never linear.

but having said all that, stick to the basics and youll definatley see results, given time.

eating can fast become over complicated, but it doesnt need to be so.

a rough aim of 2lbs per week wouldnt be unrealistic, but some weeks maybe 3, others maybe 0.5. plus if your doing a certain excersise regularly, its entirley possibel you could put weight on, through muscular development in the affected muscle, but still loose b/f.

that wouldnt be forever, but just if weight doesnt do what your exepcting, its no reason to immediatley worry.

what you doing for excersise?

kcals sound really low tbh, you got a rough macro split?

Exercise wise I am walking the dog and will hopefully be back cycling next week, 3 * 14 mile round trip, need to come up with some other stuff.

May need to adjust the calories up if I do more, sat here working it seems to be enough, 724 calories remaining today, having Lentils, Peppers and other veg with Chorizo.

Not sure what a Macro split it, are they nice, can I get low fat ones ?

have to admit im not a fan of BMI scale, ive been into heavily obese on the scale,

as said it doesnt consider body composition - but equally being so overweight muscle or not can be unhealthy
id still say its role isnt as relevant as the days of old, theres a growing number of people where its application is less and less relevant.

id also agree, the excuses are constant and ive used many myself - but genetic varyation is a definte influence in body composition/weight/health ect ect. but often its used as an excuse.

the thing is, your embarking on a journey where youll learn a lot about food, and how it works, learning about excersise and your body, and all thats inbetween. thats all hugely positive mate

Well, for dinner tonight, I'm looking at a chicken breast with a basic rice (no butter or wine - just garlic and seasoning.)

Already done a jog around the block, and will have a LIGHT blast one the weights later with a few situps.
NOthing major - don't want to stretch anything!!

14st 2lb today - lets see what we're like next week then!!!

lol there best laden with cheese, and pepperoni.

i think when putting some effort in like this, the search for foods that are within kcal limits and still remain tasty is of great benefit also - it encourages the intake of foods maybe not normal in your diet. veg is vitamin and mineral rich, along with fibre and yet still very light in kcals. so often when dieting the persons veg intake goes up, which agian is great.

one thought is dropping overall kcals too much too quickly can have a definte negative effect if its not done correctly.

portion reduction = reduction in kcal intake.

however if nutrient split isnt adjusted the bodyweight loss, can be part fat and part muscle. when you loose muscle tissue its not good. muscle is calorifically expensive for your body to keep. your body will use energy from food to help maintain it, so when muscle drops the ability to burn kcals also drops.
if its done really badly, the result can be actual fat gain, on the same reduced amount of kcals, and can result in the common problem of yo-yoing weight.

Yeah, the app does do the split and shows the main nutrients, it gives target amounts for stuff like Potassium which are easy to ignore but very important, I think people try to do their normal carby diet on 1600 calories, which cant work as you end up crashing after a sugar rush, guess you dont need to be hungry but need to eat different stuff.

For Tea, Lentils, Broccoli, Pepper, Onion with Chorizo (not much), full now. Managed to resist the wine when the wife got a glass, wasn't bothered.

A lot of people say that, but at 6ft and fairly broad you can hide a certain amount of podge, it is spread out, but I reckon about 16 is the absolute limit, think as well we have adjusted our image of what fat is as there are so many big people about, look at photos of relatives from the seventies that were about my age then, all in narrow waisted pants, probable a 30/32 waist with bell bottoms, there is me in my 38's, still fairly straight up and down just in widescreen !

As for the wind, par for the course.

Have to point out that the whole fitness / wt loss thing is a marathon not a sprint.

Must get used to a certain amount of exercise and self denial pain or better still get to

enjoy it.

Dieting is very painful. 1500 cal isn't much and you feel very hungry but it gets easier after a couple of weeks. Main thing for me is my blood sugar drops and I feel in **** mood and feel dizzy.

I downloaded the app too.

Used to be a gym buff and generally more active, which helped balance out my alcohol intake. Since i stopped the gym and general exercise, my bottom ab has gotten much bigger. People don't really notice, but i do. I used to say, if i stop drinking i lose weight, which normally happens. But of late i've been drinking more, and working in a bar, keeping crazy hours and meal times, it's been enhanced. Let's see what this app says then...

I need to lose a little as well, 6ft and nudging 14 stone. More interested in being healthy and fit than a certain weight but losing half a stone would be nice.

Mon -Fri I've cut out all unhealthy foods, nothing fried or with cheese, high fat content etc.

Sat and Sun allow myself something a little more indulgent.

One hour in the gym three- four times a week. Thirty minutes cardio and thirty minutes weights. Get bored after that.

Biggest issue is alcohol. If I could stop drinking in the week my gut would go, but it's just so tempting to crack open a bottle of Nelson Mandela after work....

Next week I'm going to try and abstain Mon-Fri...

Never used to put weight on.Then,into 30's I did,went up to 14 stone(5'10).

Now in 40's,drink loads,eat everything ,do miniscule amount of exercise and 6 pack just come back!12 stone now

your actual weight to has nothing to do with being healthy.i am obese according to bmi but i am just stocky built(which was ideal for carrying weight in the army )when i trained hard and watch food i lose a few inches around my waist but gain on thighs/uper body and my weight stays around 15 stone.so dont try and say "right i have to be such and such weight "just eat healthily,exercise regularly and enjoy life is its way too short to be worrying like a woman if your *** looks big in your jeans....lol

Bmi is recognised not to work for athletes. It works for me as I don't exercise.

Some (understatement?) people need instruction, rules and structure about their eating habits and diet. Naturally healthy eaters never understand this.

I and my family have cholesterol issues, so I just quit eating meat at the start of the year. Just vegetarian + fish most days. Without a focus on meat, I naturally eat more and more varied vegetables, pulses and fruit. I love fish too. It also stops me eating sh!tty meats, like sausage, kebab, cheap burgers, hot dogs and KFC, etc.

Not saying that's for everyone, but it helps me with my genetic propensity to high BP and cholesterol.

...and the danger with exercising to lose weight is avoiding the need to change your diet and mental state about food because the exercise consumes all those calories... Unless exercise becomes a lifestyle choice, regardless of diet, then you become interested in eating healthier as a tool for your exercise regime.

Then, and only then is Tony ready to post on Scoobynet...

Know what you mean, it is getting your head round not just stuffing crap down your neck to feel better, it takes willpower to eat an Apple rather than a Walkers Grab Bag and a Marathon.

Last night I was cold, never normally am, guess normally I am running at full capacity on a Friday night after four cans of Stella and a couple of glasses of wine, perhaps a decent sized takeaway with a pudding and then a bit of chocolate to finish. Had a decent sized meal and was full (not bloated), half my problem is overbuying or over-provisioning for the evening.

I am making it easier by thinking long term, not long term as in this taking six months to a year but over the day, delaying food half an hour and then not eating it all, just a bit then come back, it is so easy to nail your calories for the day by lunch and then you starve the rest of the day, it is like Hypermiling your body !

Not had breakfast yet, was awake at seven, not hungry so will have my porridge when I feel hungry rather than as a matter of course, avoided the box of Frosties, delicious but a total no no due to the massive sugar content, slow release, low GI foods are best for losing weight, Frosties used to be an occasional treat when I was a kid, now kids regard them as just normal.

Weight nothing to do with being healthy ? true to an extent as there can healthy overweight people and unhealthy skinny ones but as a rule being lighter for your frame is always better, I remember when the kids were young and how carrying a toddler used to be a pain in the ****, a 30 or so pound wriggling pain in the ****, I am carrying one and a bit toddlers on my person, imagine carrying a 50 pound rucksack and then taking it off, feel better ?

I am not worried what I look like, well maybe a little bit as people make certain judgements about you and generally the fatter you get, people assume you are greedy, stupid and lazy, you dont get jobs, you feel self conscious, clothes don't fit as well etc.

My main reason is health, I am 41 and have noticed I feel older, been having foot problems (tendonitis) and I am carrying weight on them i don't need to, losing the weight will go a long way to help this and if nothing else the doctor cant cite it as the cause, thing is she is probably right, we need to own up to ourselves and face the issue head on. I think when younger you are given a bit of an amnesty on these matters, like when a Pacman regenerates and has a few seconds where he is invincible, immune to the ghosts and death, at 41 that time passed a while back and we need to look after ourselves.

My blood pressure is high, don't think I have any heart disease as yet but it is a possibility, my heart has to hoik 50 pounds of extra podge around, I get out of a chair and my heart speeds up, it is all weight not contributing to motion, dead weight, useless (unless the Greek thing causes meltdown then the stored energy may be useful). Blood Pressure is a massive indicator of health and I want to take some notice of mine being high, the doctor didn't say what mine was but I took it with the home machine and it ranged from 73/133 to 86/151, I think at the doctors it was higher, so according to the chart I am on the high side of normal to stage one Hypertension, resting pulse was between 64 and 76,



I don't want to think its not that bad, my readings were done at home relaxed, when exerted, stressed or whatever it will head upwards, which is normal but it is the headroom, suspect mine goes much higher, it puts stress on organs and can cause blindness, impotence, heart attacks and strokes, none of which I fancy, as in a lot of cases you end up either dead or may as well be.


I get sick of the smart arsed comments at work, a guy I work with is a health ****, very competitive and he loves making weight comments, one of the girls at work complemented me on looking slimmer and how a particular shirt made me look good and he had to say how it showed off my "Whazzo set of Jugs" to best advantage, I take it but it is annoying, not bother what that ***** thinks as he is a bit of a **** (a widely held opinion) but I dont want him to have the ammunition, he just doesnt like anyone else getting compliments, he generally tells himself how awesome he is.

I think it makes you look older being fat, especially me having a limp at the moment (seems much better today, almost gone), not quite ready for being an old man yet, suspect i will feel much better when I am lighter, more energy as some have said. The temptation is to compare ourselves to the massive wobbling creatures we see on the telly, I found myself thinking I am not so bad because "Dave from Essex" is 28 stone and eats 5000 calories a day, best not to compare yourself to these waddling examples, best compare and base things on normal weight people.


I think this weight is a blight on my life, it spoils things, takes the edge off stuff, like cycling which I love and am fairly good at but I feel self conscious, you cant really hide in effectively what is a black rubber johnny with leg holes, so it puts me off, if I was normal weight I wouldn't think twice about the Lycra.

It is like anything in life, losing weight, here and now it seems a big deal and if I dont do anything it will be a slightly bigger deal in a year, if I do something now and stick with it, in a year it wont be an issue at all, think when we are younger we expect things to happen immediately, as I have got older I have realised life isnt like that, sustained effort is what is required and you can do pretty much anything if you put your mind to it, people who achieve things don't generally just do it straight away, we only see the end result.

I think what my main thing is, things happen to us, medically but I don't want to be sat in a wheelchair regretting not making the changes that could have made the difference, doing everything I can to avoid it.
