Got my 100mb upgrade
Lmao at this thread. I get about 6.5Mb when its working well but for the last few months it is crap during the evening. I did some downloads last night around 5.30pm from my work ftp server and google docs and both just hovered around 54KB/sec – yep you read that right. Same test this morning at 6.15am and its 800KB/sec.
I was with Pipex but its TalkTalk now and they suck. I can’t be arsed raising a support ticket to be told nothing is wrong. Plusnet seem pretty competitive and no 12 mth contract needed + £50 cash back at the moment so I may just give them a go – can’t be any worse (famous last words)….

That's the downside of a contended service. You're sharing your broadband connection with your neighbours so at peak hours it will be slow.
I had the same problem with BT, off peak I got around 7Mbit, during peak it dropped to 1Mbit. I left and went to Be (who have their own network) and have had the full 7Mbit 24\7 for several years.
That's what worries me about BT Infinity. If BT couldn't cope with 20 or 40 people sharing an 8Mbit connection, how will they possibly cope with that many people sharing an 80Mbit connection. I think the Infinity take up is still reasonably low at the moment so I can only see it slowing down when the majority of it's total broadband users are moved across to Infinity.

All services are contended in one way or another – even dedicated leased lines for Public Internet access no matter what your ISP tells you (i.e. shared trunk access to their core network). If my neighbours don’t have the same issues connected to the same exchange then it suggests TalkTalk haven’t got enough capacity from the exchange into their network or further along the chain. And knowing how they work I doubt that will change any time soon.
I will have to try a speedtest comparison early evening tonight and early morning tomorrow to see if that mirrors the same degrade in performance I see.
Anyway I am awaiting my MAC code so will switch to Plusnet unless I find something more appealing in the next couple of days.

i already use several torrent sites with a private trackers. these sites will max out my 100Mbit connection if say i download a few episodes of a tv series. i still find that NZB sites offer the variety AND speeds that torrent sites can only dream about.
Granted not as fast as Usenet, but slow? not at all.
Whats the rush? You don't need to DL everything at max speed
Yep I have plenty too for my unix distro
needs, they always max out my puny connection, so for me its fine and remember free
As for content, there's nothing yet I haven't been able to find, so not sure about that point either.

The point is Ant its available as a torrent, therefore it can be dloaded from a decent torrent site other than the cack that is isohunt and therefore will dload quickly
There are all sorts of reasons why speeds vary and without knowing his line stats and any applicable traffic management in place by the ISP, it's not logical to come to a contention ratio issue conclusion.
