I go to the British National Formulary for prescribing information, but where google is good is for combining search terms, for foreign drugs, finding patient groups/organisations for support, leaflets etc. It will often bring up published papers as well, but like everything it needs weighing carefully.
People similarly criticise wikipedia, but I think it is rather good, and on some topics is as good a summary as any other.
Where it gets difficult is searching as a patient because it can be tricky to be discerning about what you believe when you aren't used to appraising medical literature, and perhaps also because you're reading it yourself. Doctors should avoid diagnosing themselves or their families for this reason.

I'm sure back in the day I would have said I trust their advice.
I recently got what I thought was a cold and then when l blew my nose one side as bright yellow.
I had a metallic taste in my mouth, felt violently sick and felt a lump in my throat when swallowing.
the cold symptoms went excdpt the hot and cold flushes but the rest didn't.
I went to the doctor who said it's viral it'll go in 3wks.
2wks later I couldn't even swallow with a huge lump that you could visably see. Went back to be told it's viral.
I got so fed up I went to the wall in centre as I really had enough. They told me to see gp in the morning and he wasn't happy.
he reluctantly gave me antibiotics and within 2days I felt amazing.
I really do feel now days they don't want to help at all.
I've since had 2 colds and similar symptoms but fortunately it cleared itself up.
privatise the nhs!
