Devastated
A similar thing happened to me with my Sunbeam TI, not nice. Main thing is you're ok.
The feeling of helplessness as you stand there and watch it burn is not good. Alas, I had it again 3 months ago when I had to watch my house do it!
Fire ain't good
Geezer

Wow, just read this. I was reading your thread the other day and thinking what a great sounding car and then I see this ...
Glad you made it out, it must have been so rapid that you didnt even have time to get one of the extinguishers out

Gutted for you, I was only watching your video in Other Marques the other day
We have a very rare Mk1 RS Mex with the AVO engine in the family and I'd be devastated to see anything happen to that.

Absolutely gutted for you, but you're alive to build another.
Thats real bad luck but the main thing is you are OK.
Probably caused by a fuel line coming off one of the carbs and I doubt if one of your extinguishers would have put that out as the modern ones are full of "environmentally friendly" stuff that struggles to put out a match.

What a nightmare, must be terrible to see your pride and joy going up in flames and nothing you can do about it.
Glad you got out ok though, fire spreads so much faster than anyone thinks. Done a few safety courses recently and there was quite a few videos of fires, scary how quickly fire spreads.

I hesitate to use the word 'gutted' for obvious reasons.
But seeing as it spread so quickly, I'm just glad your fight or flight reaction was working A-OK!!! Very, very lucky escape going by what you say. Just glad you're here to actually be able to even tell this story.

With regards to extinguishers - over and above whatever you keep in the cabin or have plumbed in, Id suggest a 4kg-6kg powder extinguisher kept in the boot. You can retain it using straps or brackets for a plumbed in chubby bottle to keep it in place. Ive extended the hose to double the usual length on mine, so that you can air up and under the sills whilst keeping the bottle upright. Add a pair of welding gauntlets and you give yourself a better than average chance.

Well, I went to see the car to recover some items from the boot (If they survived) on Friday to save claiming for them on the insurance seeing as they would only cover for £100 of personal items inside the car. (Check your policies to make sure your personal items are covered in the small print) I'm having to go through my house insurance for my other items . I managed to recover my Torque wrench and other tools along with a seemingly indestructible Auto Glym Hi Def Wax!!!!!!!!!
I was, though, NOT happy to see the car now living in a scrap yard!!!!!!!!!!:
On another note, I am sick to death to hear from "Vultures" wanting parts or the whole car and even some "Friends" offering money for the car to the scrap dealer. (No one need know etc.............) The car is a Cat A total loss and therefore not one part is to be salvaged. I have purposely gone round the car with a lump hammer to smash anything that I can see that could be removed. (Cam cover, Sump, Bellhousing, ALL panels, Bumpers etc. I have also made an appointment to inspect the car before it is bailed over the next couple of days just to make sure nothing is removed. The owner of the yard commented that he wished the car had never come in as it has caused him so much grief!!!!!!
Some horrible pics.

The Indestructible wax LOL

After doing all this, I then had a phone call from school saying that James had fallen over and had broken his arm...............................What a day!!!!!!!

I will not be going down the restoring route again as my wife has banned me LOL I will buy an A1 car that I can just enjoy for once without worrying. Ideally I would like a MK2 RS2000 original dealer X Pack but I would also like another MK1 RS2000 in Modena Green or an RS3100 Capri also in Modena Green. All of these cars are extremely rare now so I may be in for a long wait.

2 fire extinguishers.... in the front and you didn't have time? but on another note "gutted for you"
