In terms of cost a specialist will always be cheaper than a dealer when it comes to classic imprezas. If it was something like a 2009 onwards model then even I would be wanting to visit a dealer.
Not strictly true, any cars we get say over 4 years old we do preferential rates which are more in line with the independent garages

I sort of agree and disagree here, its a bit of a tricky area, where as a "speciallist" may be cheaper, it does not mean they are better.
I've seen first hand cars that have gone from "speciallist" to "speciallist" with faults that they could not be fixed and end up at a more expensive (but very reputable and respected garage) and have been fixed.
It would have been cheaper in the first place to go straight to said garage (even though their hourly labour charge is more) and have the job done right first time than do the rounds and leave the owner in debt from "speciallists".
Hence I go for the garage with the best reputation, not just "speciallists"
