Bud, it's all good. There will always be someone faster than you... Or someone who will try to challange you. The main thing is to enjoy your car. Theres nothing to prove to anybody, no ones gonna give you a medal for it so stay wise. Best thing is to get the suspension and brakes sorted and try it on the track. Improve your driving skills. I've just seen a lad with the D2 brakes allround and apex coilies in a standart power UK2000 giving a run for the money to decent spec cars like type ra's classics, jdm blob's etc @ snetterton. Power is not everything !

For point to point driving, it's all about torque. High RPM BHP is pretty useless on the twistys. Modern diesels are very good indeed.

Not sure why your shocked, a bog standard wrx of any era (classic/bug/hawk) etc isnt that fast compared to alot of new cars being made.

not sure what i was watching but i recall an electric/hybrid thing being 200 bhp from the factory !

scoobs are not quick nowadays unless ££££££ is invested

You gotta factor in the cost as well. Your WRX is what, £1.5k for a classic, £3k for a newage. A recent beemer 535d is somewhere between £15 and £40k, probably plus the cost of a remap. Not such a disgrace really. Just think, you are getting as many smiles per mile, and many more smiles per pound

Had my **** handed to me by a (hopefully remapped) 330d on the M6 many moons ago, which prompted me to Prodrive my MY97 classics.

The fun is when the situation is reversed. Smoked a +£40k Carrera 4 in my £6k 944 turbo on the A14 about 10 years ago. The drivers face was a picture when I kept letting him catch me up so I could do it again. Eventually he stopped trying and turned off the M11 at Duxford. Funnily enough the exit for the regions Porsche dealer. Wonder if he was taking it in to complain LOL

There's always going to be something faster. Hopefully it's more expensive.

I remember getting embarrassed by a Nova. I was in a 300+ GTIR and he came passed me like I was standing still.
Later found out it was a calibre turbo engined nova but even so,,,, a bloody nova !!!

Ernie nova (member of BBS) overtook a 600bhp evo at combe a couple of years back, his nova started life in a garden with a tree growing through it. He paid £50 for it, then stripped it and put a calibra lump in it. The evo driver had spent around £60K on his car, he sold it the very next day ........

The 535d is the Pistonheads car of choice. It has unbelievable torque figures. There are not many scoobs out there that compare to a mapped one.

How would the current STi compare to a 535d standard vs standard?

Well out of the box you can get;

535d - 0.60 in 5.3s
Standard STi - 0-60 in 5.0s
STi 330s - 0-60 in 4.6s

So not that different. Although the higher speeds I'm not sure.

It's not just BMW's you need to watch out for. I had an Astra diesel 150BHP with a DTUK running box taking it to circa 200BHP and shed loads of torque. I managed to pass a Bug WRX without too much trouble and, yes, he was trying lol.

I think with the BMW's pure pulling power and the 535d having a second turbo, I think it would be a race of two halfs where the Sti will shoot off into the lead, then at 60-70mph that's when the Bmw will come into its own.

My Missus had a 330d and that was pretty quick in standard form with great torque, we did think about getting it mapped but sold in the end. A mapped sti shouldn't have any problems seeing off a 535d unless you ain't driving it hard enough

I think that would depend on the road, a damp country lane then the STI all the way but dry open road with the odd bend here and there and i doubt it would be going anywhere.

It would be interesting to see how a mapped STI would stack up against a mapped 535 on track.

In the dry the beemer is quick, but putting all that torque down onto an even mildly moist road it will spin like crazy, where the scoob will take off.
