The car is only technically illegal if it has failed an emissions test regardless of the exhaust cats or not.

Rebuild was done about 12k miles ago. It says vehicle was sent to autodoctor for engine overhall. I also just found this in the manual. No idea what it is

From what I was told very recently by a police officer any exhaust system other than OE is now illegal regardless if it passes an MOT or not.

Not sure if what he was telling me is true or just trying scare tactics but he is a police officer so would hope he's not doing that.

Could this be why it's Still got the cat underneath, but not the one in the downpipe? And it must be mapped for it then? This changes things lol
The certificate says use 97 Ron which I have been using.

I thought they removed the rear cat and fitted a prodrive sport cat in the downpipe

Doesn't explain why the second cat would still be fitted!

B0110cks, for bikes they need a kitemark or something similar but no such legislation has been introduced for cars. For cars with cats fitted as OE, whether pre-92 or not, they must have a cat fitted at MOT time but even that doesn't specify that it has to be an OE cat

I just found this about the ppp http://www.prodrive.com/up/03MY%20STi%20PPP.pdf
I'm sure there is a cat under the car, near the front. I have an aftermarket back box, is there any other way of checking if I have the other stuff it's meant to have?

PPP on the STi involved removing the centre cat (the one you're talking about) but including a sport cat in the new downpipe. Are you sure it's a cat and not the resonator - which is retained in the PPP system? When the centre cat is removed and replaced with a pipe, the heat shield is usually replaced. If it's there, you may find there is no cat in it!

cat or no cat the main problem is the knackered engine.

That's out of date! The regs from the 1st Jan states that if a car had cat(s) fitted as standard then it must still have a cat. Passing an emissions test without a cat (very unlikely!) is no good, it's got to have a cat!

It could be anything, I just assumed it was a cat. I will need to check when or if I get the car back.

And yea tommy your right, its kind of irrelevant if it has the ppp still on or not, it still has the engine problem I'm just thinking it might not be as serious if it's had a remap by prodrive?

the ppp remap doesnt cover a decat, any mods done require a remap and using a large amount of oil as yours does indicates a major engine fault.

Would that not make the PPP illegal then?

lol, this is going round & round in circles!!

It had two cats fitted in standard form, when pop was fitted the removed one cat only, leaving one in place, therefore not illegal.

Can we move on now please

The way i read JohnD's comments is that if it has 2 cats as standard it must retain 2 cats. Matters not to me - chances of me affording to run another Scoob are somewhere around zero

No, that's why I said "it must still have a cat" although there's been a lot of discussion on this and not a small amount of scaremongering!

The garage said they can't do much until Tuesday because everyone is on holiday so he can't source a coil pack. He seems to think that's all that's wrong with it. I have no idea. Did you get a remap when you took out your cat? Or was there any check engine lights came on? Thanks
