Whilst one could say its all the government's faults. What has happened to the prinicipal of being responsible for one's own action?

If the goverment told you to jump off a cliff - would you do it?

Lots of people complain about the government's nanny-state tactics (i.e trying to stop us drinking and smoking ourselves to death and shed loads of H&S red tape at work), with people wanting to be responsible for their own choices in life rather than it being dictated to them.

Yet here is a case where someone is devoid of common sense who has to rely on someone or an entity to brainwash them into knowing what they can/can't do and then ultimately those with a clue all suffer because of it.

< awaits some new knee-jerk legislation to make it illegal to keep petrol or more than one container near a house or on/in a property/vehicle (currently two containers - 5l for platic, 10l for metal) I have to use three petrol containers...one with 40:1 premix, one 50:1 premix (damn enviro-friendly non-adjustable carburetor )and one neat They aren't kept anywhere near the house though >

 

+1 I mean it's not as if it's not common knowledge that petrol is HIGHLY flammable.

Not above feeling some sympathy though: moment of stupidity (which none of us are above) now means she'll be scarred for life.

 

Perhaps she was ignorant to the dangers of petrol vapours igniting, not the actual liquid.
Either way a costly mistake brought on by the idiots that try to run this country.

i had some stupid bint gabbing away on her mobile while filling her car yesterday. i looked at her, as if to say ******* wise up you daft b1tch. ******* clueless, she just smiled and continued on.

 

Mobiles are fine, that was just a myth .

 

What about cars that have Spark plugs that SPARK when turning the key... ?

I have filled up loads while smoking in south asia. You can if fact, chuck a lit *** end in bucket of petrol and the *** goes out. Do not however flick a match in the bucket then kick it as this will create a giant ball of flame.
As for this woman she is an idiot and this is an example of the nanny state creating more and more stupid people who lose all ability to look aftter themselves.

 

i have sympathy for the woman and her family but no-one fault but her own IMO and if you had the slighest doubt about the intent of the ****** upstairs...................

I thought it was more that the action of using a phone wasn't a problem but if you happened to drop it there was more of a chance of causing a spark.

Or maybe its just the fact that you should be concetrating when dispensing fuel not chatting on the phone.

 

Poor woman. She probably wasn't thinking. A bit like the gormless Politician, who made the stupid remark and sent all the sheep, hairtailing it off to the petrol station to fill up

 

Unfortunate accident, but there is only one person who created this situation and she was pouring the fuel. Responsibility of ones own actions. Don't blame the government

 

But "common knowledge" requires "common experience" and its likely that she had none, therefore it's a meaningless and non-existent concept.

And I wouldn't call it stupidity either, as in her limited experience in handling fuels she wouldn't have realised the likely dangers of explosive vapours.

It's funny at my old work if you were driving and handling petrol in containers and 'decanting' from one to another, you would need about half a dozen safety things signing off, and a 'risk assessment' bollox.

 

I dont care what anyone says, why doesnt common sense come in ?

I feel for this lady but she must have been off her head on fumes to do what she did.

 

Even accounting for the fact that's she's a woman, and was therefore probably multi-tasking, which could explain her lapse in common sense, why on earth would you do something like that indoors anyway? Surely just the issue of fumes would make you do it outside?

That's quite correct - witness the number of seemingly "sensible" people who think that chucking petrol on a nearly dead b-b-q will get it going.

To the woman in question "fumes" were things that come out of a kettle when boiling.

She obviously did not realise the danger involved, maybe no one had ever told her how inflammable the fumes are. It is surprising how many people don't realise the danger of their actions when no one has ever told them about it.

Basically it is her fault, and a combination of the tanker drivers and their employers, if they paid them properly and they didn't threaten strike action then this daft woman would never get near petrol, other than from a pump, add in all the panic then can see how it happened, laziness really as there are other ways to get about but the terror of not being able to use the car has people pissing about with flamable liquids in the kitchen, we managed for millions of years before the car and are now so dependant we are prepared to risk self immolation for a couple of miles worth of petrol.

What she did was wilfully dumb, she didn't deserve it, nobody does but it's a harsh way to learn.

They are on a minimum of 35k plus benefits!
Originally there were going to strike about workplace safety issues, and working times.
However since yesterday when the government relaxed the tacho laws for them allowing them to drive in excess of the 4.5 hour rule, they all seem to have gone quiet, and are no longer moaning about safety related stuff.

Funny that isnt it, that they can drive longer than any other HGV driver on UK roads, and get a damn good overtime rate at the same time but it's no longer a safety issue

 

The typo was actually 'that try' to run this country.
Anyway, without the so called Government advice which they have been slammed for stations wouldn't be empty today, end of. There was no reason to 'fuel' the fire resulting in the chaos that we've seen over the last couple of days.

The advice was to store at home, and from what i've read her daughter ( i think) needed some petrol hence she was filling another container for her. Why didn't she pour it straight into the tank, who knows....and like i have said she was obviously ignorant to the dangers of vapour.
I'm not saying she wasn't at fault just implying it was avoidable to which ministers bad handling of the situation played a significant part.

Yes and the goverment said to keep it in the garage! Not to play silly bollox and take it in to your kitchen to move it from a proper container whilst around a naked flame.

The woman c*cked up big style and I must admit I did laugh a bit at her stupidity and then thought, who's going to get the blame for that.

Her fault and only her fault, nobody else's!

Common sense again though. Why would you think about taking it in doors? If the light isn't good enough then take it outside. If its dark, get the daughter to hold a torch or wait until the morning!
She didn't poor it straight in the tank because the can didn't have a funnel. So why use that can then?

Technically this has come about due to media scare and union strike threats.

Of which is brought about by the UK's business politics on employing everyone on limited length contracts. And it in turn affecting pensions (and the transfer of them)

That inturn was created by a previous government making it too hard to sack people or make them redundant and also wrecking the private pension system (making workers more aware that it is even more crucial to protect their pension).

Which was in itself brought about by union favoured action to protect workers and the last govenments desire to better protect public sector pensions and plunder the private ones.

So, in short: Media, Unions, Governments (past and present) are all to blame for this week's mayhem.
