I've currently got Mintex 1155's on the front and 1144's on the rear - they are dusty though - have to change the fronts - got some Pagid RS4's to go on - they are slightly used (from my Mrs old brakes before she upgraded to 4 pots) but they have plenty of life in them.

My car current setup is WRX two pots for the front and WRX single pots on the rear.

My Mrs' car current setup is WRX Four pots for the front and WRX single pots on the rear.

We have both got 1155's on the front and 1144's on the rear.

Both cars are Impreza Sports - she has a Sport Special in yellow.

Thanks. Anything a little bit more "budget"? Is this the correct Tarox ones for an 05 Blob WRX? http://www.dcperformance.co.uk/cheap...x-2703g88.html
Discs are £230 ish
The pads are also £170. Total £400 :S

I was thinking more around the £200-£250 mark for both discs and pads! Would that be any better than standard ones?

Which makes the biggest difference on fade? Discs or pads? (also want to use them on road so need them to work from cold).

I know you can change pads and not the disc, but if the disc changes, I need to get pads too.

Thanks

Sorry didnt see your post dark_angel.
To sound quite thick here... but... Is the 05 WRX 4-pot on front and 2-pot on rear as standard?
Mintex pads seem more in my budget. Are they any better at preventing fade? Are your discs as standard?
I was thinking of a basic drilled and grooved disc and Mintex pads. Would that help fade?

Cheers - sorry to sound dumb- I've always stuck with standard brakes until my running off the track at Bedford Autodrome incident! With Cadwell coming up I really dont want to be running off the track there!

Is there a notable difference between bog standard Mintex pads and the 1155/1144's?

If you are on a budget and your current discs are ok then a good set of front pads would give you the best value improvement. Std pads are not likely to be any better than you already have, M1144 would be one step up and then M1155 up again.

Might be worth saving a bit more to get a trackday friendly setup, cheaper than crashing the car.

Thanks for your advice. I think I've settled on getting Mintex 1144 or 1155 pads and some high performance brake fluid (305C boiling point Dot 4 Gulf RF800), as I think that contributed to my brake fade, and keeping my discs as standard. Do I need to declare the pads and fluid on insurance?

I saw these graphs of pad performance at temperature, but I want to keep dust, noise and low temperature braking performance to a maximum (for typical road use, which is 99.5% of my miles!). Should I stick with 1144's or 1155's? There isnt much difference in price.

Interesting read. I always thought the Mintex pads were somewhat budget in comparison to some of the other brands, so perhaps they're worth a look. Is this on 4 pots, Brembos or aftermarket calipers? (sorry, lazy didn't read all of first page)

I've run Ferodo DS2500, Yellow Stuff, Kevlar pads and OEM Subaru pads on WRX 4 pots, and Blue stuff on my K-Sports.

Must say the K-Sports will help, but the blue stuffs are great - fantastic bite from cold - ignore any nonsense from people who say there are problems with cold bite - that was a problem with old yellow stuff pads, but the new compounds are very very good IMO.

On 4 pots I found Yellow Stuff and DS2500's to be similar - even with grooved discs, braided lines and uprated fluid the car suffered badly from brake fade after a few good launches and hard braking.

K-Sports and blue stuffs - haven't managed to get em to fade yet.

It's standard 4 pots for the WRX.
By my thinking the best option for under £200 (under £150 in fact!) is the fluid and pads. Can't seem to find bluestuff for the 05 WRX - am I looking in the wrong place? They seem to be about £150 for the STi.

Just unsure whether to get the Mintex 1144 or 1155's. Might as well get the 1155's if they have the same cold performance/dust issue.

This is the fluid I'll get:

Phone Ian and ask him!
Or go online and have a look..

In regards to brake dust, I would advise seriously considering ability to brake vs how clean your wheels are! The latter would be way down the list for me.
I found Ferodo's to be exceptionally dusty, EBC's a little less.
Kevlars less dusty again but then they didn't stop the car very well.

There is a huge difference between the standard pads and the Mintex pads or most upgraded pads.

The EBC bluestuff ones seem to be the "daddys" at the moment.

Brake dust is an unhappy by product of better braking - give me better brakes anytime !

Different pads perform differently in difference caliper setups, so it's hard to give a definitive answer. As a general rule though:

Recommended

Kevlar Fast Road Pads - Ideal as a stage one pad, good bite from cold, improved stopping power and fade resistance. Low dust and wear. People tend to prefer these more the Redstuff.

EBC Bluestuff NDX - Ideal fast road and track pad. More effective on track when used with decent calipers. Work from cold and have a wide temp range. Dust levels surprisingly low and decent wear rate. As used by the K-Sport Time Attack Pro Impreza last season.

New EBC Orangestuff - A track pad that seems also to work well on the road. Slightly more aggressive than the NDX compound with improved bite. Downsides are increased wear rate and dust, although still not reported to be at all bad. Same price as the NDX.

All the above as well as Performance Friction, Pagid and Mintex are stocked. We have first hand experience of most of the compounds so will be able to advise anyone that needs advice.

I went from the Kevlars at the front to the orangestuff in January.

I wouldnt consider using a Kevlar pad again now. They work fine from cold and once they have some heat in them, are simply amazing! I was sceptical about the cold bite as i take my daughter to nursery but it just isnt an issue.

The only concern is how long they will stay at such a cheap price compared to some of the other fast road/ track pads.

I have ebc blues on and yes they are good hot and cold, but have heard not that good on tracks compared to ds2500 which i still have just a bit rubbish when cold but apperently do well on tracks.
I am going for pagids when my pads wear, as all ive heard ar far superior pads that the popular ones, and i belive in buy the best then you cant whine later down the line.
Go for budget then you will fail short somewhere depending on what you want to use your car for.

I can supply you our grooved 294mm discs with black painted centres and either bluestuff or orangestuff pads for £199 plus £12.50 P&P

We have all these in stock for a next day delivery.

They have made a change to the orangestuff pads which will be available in the next few weeks , they have made them last longer as the hardest of users on track were finding they wouldn't last , if you don't use your car hard on the track you will get on with them very well

Cheers Ian
