Ive been looking at a few more options that might just fall within my price bracket. I've tried to compare bhp/t figures and pulled most of it from this site:

http://www.strikeengine.com/performa...top-speed.html

Make Model bhp Weight Ins group bhp/t
BMW e36 325i 192 1.78 15 108
BMW e36 328i 193 1.78 16 108
Ford Puma 1.7 125 1 12 125
Peugeot 205 gti 1.6 115 0.91 12 126
Citroen Saxo vts 120 0.94 14 128
Mazda MX5 mk2 1.8i s 140 1.06 13 132
Peugeot 306 GTI-6 167 1.2 15 139
Citroen Xsara VTS 167 1.2 16 139
Peugeot 205 gti 1.9 130 0.91 14 143
Honda Civic 1.8 vti 169 1.16 15 146
Renault Clio 172 172 1.11 16 155
Toyota Corolla t-sport 189 1.2 14 158

I still like the idea of an mx5 due to the rwd.

325s are always bags of fun, but are pricey to run compared with MX5 / Eunos due to their weight; The MX5 barely only sips fuel, a full set of comp disks / pads are less than £250 - and last forever- and they don't generally break.

Properly set up they're bags of fun and cheap as chips.

You do, however, need a cage - on the odd occassion that they roll it never ends well.

What are the n/a mr2's like? I'd think they'd be reliable being Toyota. Quite small and light and rwd too.

MX5 take some beating, especially as a starter RWD car.

172 clios are great little cars.

Mk2 golfs, loads out there, very tuneable and plenty of parts available.

Pop over to Northloop.co.uk the forum has loads and loads of varying cars of all styles and standards and we can help you to get the right stuff.

Oh and I have an MX5, an E30 325i and 205GTi, all of which are track cars, all great fun in very different ways.

i got a e36 m3 for track and e46 m3 and they are both cracking. 328 is much cheaper way to get 90% of the fun/speed for much less money.

Right now im thinking of trying a boxster S. they can be stripped to around 1000kg! and 250 bhp MR could be fun! And they have cracking brakes as standard.

You should also consider something like a 318 compact. They are about 250 kg lighter than the coupe standard. a tiny light engine when supercharged can give plenty of go. Or swap in a bigger lump for very cheap.

Both sound great, but unfortunately beyond my budget.

Sounds like a potential, although they are still pretty heavy compared to the mx5 et al.

Blimey, you don't mess about? Got a big garage then?

I will pop over and have a look at your site.

For that reason I think I would go with the mx5 over the bmw if I was going to go down the rwd route. The only problem is that I have just started looking at the wrong time of year. I suppose the best time to buy a softtop is a gloomy autumn day.

I've had the 205 for close to 10 years now. It needs some work doing, but it's still solid.

The E30 (Jaffa cake) is my current play thing. It's great fun and goes really nicely.

The MX5 has done lots of track work in the past, but not so much now.

It has to be MX5 for that budget, but it depends on the track.

At larger, wider tracks an mx5 might feel underpowered, but not significantly compared to the other choices you list.

On the other hand, I was up at cadwell last weekend, and there was some MX5 track car there (I'm talking caged + stripped out with trick suspension), and bar the scoobyclinic car that was also there, it was the fastest thing out there.

Very, very impressive track car for the money, provided you can fit in one. I used to have a Mk1 1.6 with LSD, but I never tracked it. Unfortunately the FIA cage will mean a hard or soft top is out of the question, which is painful in the rain.
