Does it show?!?!

Seriously though I think there is a difference between a solo that occupies part of a song and sits in the mix in a fluid and supportive way and a solo that is just detached from any kind of musical context or sits uncomfortably in a piece just so a musician can basically say: "See, see, look how good I am - watch me do some musical masturbation"

It's like comparing the guitar solos of David Gilmore to Steve Vai. I know who is the more technically accomplished player, but I also know who's solos I would much rather listen to!

Fair point but even I could quite easily play what he was doing.

Sure, there are lots of drum solos that I don't wish to hear more than once even though they've been played by exceptionally accomplished drummers and there are solos I've listened to and watched dozens of times. The issue isn't with the format it's to do with taste. I understand the less is more thing, but drummers like showing off and other drummers like watching them show off. If I want to listen to ten-a-penny stuff I'll listen to my own mediocrity.

I'm sure you could,

BUT and this is the crucial thing: would you have composed and performed something that worked as well in that song off of your own back?

This is what I mean: music shouldn't be about: 'Am I as technically good as this person' i.e. "can I reproduce what they are doing" it's more about "How does what they/I am doing contribute to a composition.

It's composition, not competition. I think people lose sight of that sometimes!

That's what makes music work!

It's not even a "less is more thing": I'm not saying that something technically advanced is automatically unnecessary or showing off. Sometimes "more" contributes to a composition. Check out the guy from Slipknot

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DYeOU...eature=related

What I am saying is that the litmus test of a musician is how well they can integrate what they do (however competent they may be) with other musicians, not "how fast can they play" or "can other drummers etc do that".

Otherwise it's just an exhibition that will appeal to people who can appreciate how hard what they're doing is from a technical point of view (i.e. other drummers), but will leave most people cold, or just nodding in appreciation of something that looks/sounds hard to do!

Ps how does that guy not have a crippling headache after just one song!!

I listened to about thirty seconds of that noise. I know people love what Joey Jordison does, but it's not for me.

Let me get this straight. Somebody in this thread is seriously touting Jordison as an example of a good drummer who serves the music?

Yep, I am!

And I put it to you that anyone who says otherwise has a case of the green eyed monster! Bit like the ejeets who claimed the guitarists couldn't play! Problem is some people hear a metal track and can't get past the fact that the genre is not to their taste (which is fair enough; taste in music is subjective), but to claim that Jordison is not a talented drummer is nonsense. Sorry!

He's not my favourite though. This guy is something pretty special

The guy from Green day is pretty tasty on the tubs too! One of those drummers who you just enjoy watching!

**** me it's Keith Lemon on Bass

That sort of music leaves me cold, to me there's far more passion in what Slipknot do, awful as it is

If you're talking about the best drum SOLO then you have to look at this guys stuff, and I'm amazed he's only been mentioned once.

The only time I've ever been to a gig and no one's gone off for a pee when the drum solo starts:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GHkucr1jJpQ

But if you want to talk about a guy that can make a song groove then lets not forget the late great Jeff Porcaro

But my fav is this guy:

No, I'll be sure to check them out! I've really gone off Dream Theater since Portnoy left, don't know why. I haven't even bought their last album which is strange for me considering I have them all, and all the DVD's.
