The world best ever drum solo?
|
Very good.
I thought this young guys was good when considering he is using nothing but plastic buckets. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cgSaSojoI4 |
Not the best drum solos, or drummers, but Tommy Lee and Rick Allen stand out for me in the genre.
Tommy Lee for entertainment value (drumming whilst on a 360 degree rollercoaster) and Rick Allen for showing that you can do anything if you put your mind to it, very inspiring bloke. |

A similar problem afflicts the guitar world; it can become all about showing off technique or speed (musical masturbation) but that kind of thing doesn't move you, you just appreciate from an "technical" standpoint. The music won't be everyone's cup of tea, but look at the way what this guy does is both technically impressive but at the same time has a clear role in motivating the melody! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=acPK3...eature=related |
There's been loads of brilliant drummers over the years - Cozy Powell, Stewart Copeland, Bonzo, Keith Moon, him out of Bros.... the list is endless and each has their own distinctive style.
That Buddy Rich video is awesome - a guy of his age doing a 4 min plus solo of that intensity :thumb: eta - they're fit ****ers, aren't they! |
I really rate this guy too. Nothing overly flashy but he's just spot on and everything done seems to just drive the music forward.
If you've never seen Rammstein live, you should. Remarkable group! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVcg4egBCJw |
I saw the title and thought, "Right let's post some Buddy Rich"
:lol1: |

:lol1: edited to say crikey MUST!!! have been over 25 years ago as he died in 1987 must have been early 8os |
Being a drummer myself I have to say that is superb. I've seen some great drummers in my time the best probably being Bonzo, his son Jason, Carl Palmer and Vinnie Coloutia.

Have to say i agree with NS04,
Whilst the drumming solo is good, its just some bloke bashing the drums, no real rhythm or tempo, Much prefer a complex drum solo, or a complex rapidly changing rhythm One of the ones i like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dthy6...eature=related Mart |
Other really good drummers include Thomas Lang, Neil Peart and of course myself ;)

All the above are good, but could they do all that whilst still looking good in a miniskirt and stilettos :wonder:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6LAyskAyNU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twvht...ture=endscreen She did when she anchored Prince's band in the '80s :notworthy |
No one mentioned Mike Portnoy yet? :wonder:

Dave Weckl's about as good as they come technique-wise if you can get past the woeful jazz-fusion accompaniment and hair. This is mercifully drums only (but with hair) and is on the first tutorial video bought for me by my Aunt Gloria when I was a teenager.
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&sou...ZejOxjeeL94VHA ETA: The full video's called Back to Basics from the late 80s for anyone interested. |
This is good fun. I saw it sometime ago and it appears to have had about 7 million hits since.

Nothing special at all about that I'm afraid.
Being technically very skilled does not a good musician make IMHO In the same way that having great ball control skills (careful) ;) Does not make you a good footballer. Technical skills are important of course, but it's more about their application i.e. how well you play your role in the team. Drum solos do nothing in that respect; they just show you what someone is technically capable of without the constraints of needing to compliment the rest of the music. Ns04 |

But that's the point im making: there is nothing remarkable about the technique, nothing flashy, but what he is doing is motivating the music; it is put in context - he is an integral part of the band and the song.
