But as for this..... ^^^ Miscreant: "Do you want to come round mine for coffee, luv?"

"8 Ace"-type down & outs, start queuing round the block at Lee's house. Roll up roll up...

Tell me Lee, what did your, then, future husband have/job, etc. when you met him?

I find it intriguing that when people observe that it is the person, not the material things that count - almost always they will say even if someone has nothing they can be attractive.

Why is it people rarely if ever say - I can see past the millions in the bank or houses and cars of the wealthy? Maybe making it even harder to see the real person.

We seem to wear the hair shirt as a badge of honour. Is it a British thing, a uniquely British class thing? Not so much in other countries.

I watched Take me out a couple of years ago and some lad was on who was just average looking, say 7/8 lights went out when he walked into the show. He then said he owned 2 companies, jetted around the world and was worth about £8m. After that not one light went out in any round Obviously it had nothing to do with the money

He could be talking about me. As he mentioned my post count on another thread.

Some kind of strange obsession/fetish I'm thinking.

Anyway, Porches are cool, and nothing wrong with chipped mugs either as long as the tea in the mug is nice.

British society wasn't very socially mobile until the 20th century Trout, it was only after WW1 that the old rigid hierarchies broke down and a true bourgeois class emerged. Still in some parts of high society money won't buy you respect unless you have a truckload, we are very sensitive/judgmental to peoples accents and manners in this country. In places like Australia and the USA they are less like this.

I think that is what you are talking about unless you mean a kind of asceticism being an 'honor'? Cultures such as ancient India etc would revere certain ascetics who gave up worldly goods. Nietzsche writes about the ascetic quite a bit, how it can be the ultimate act of nobility.

Rich, driven, materialistic people cannot conceive that not everyone has the same values as them.

I'd admit that most people are somewhat hypocritical when they claim not to want to be rich, but truly some of the people I have met in my life who I would consider the most virtuous, the strongest, most balanced people, have not an ounce of what I would call 'drive' or 'ambition' in them to 'succeed' in a narrow material or 'power' sense. I do kind of view a certain ambition, drive as coming from a place of weakness/sickness in some people, the strong don't need to crush others to feel strong. Not all ambition is like this though when it is bestowing.

Aside from his, ahem, spelling, he also calculated that 1 + 14,500 = 14,6xx too.

No wonder UK companies look to employ non-nationals.................

I see.

Well, It means I have spoken in your defence; even when it was done by mistake. So, thank this non-national i.e. me.

I meant mean towards cv; not you.

Thing is, it probably is YOU who he's referring too anyway. Or one of the other really high posters on this thread (I'm a mere 'newbie' by comparison ).

[QUOTE=tony de wonderful;10506054] Rich, driven, materialistic people cannot conceive that not everyone has the same values as them.[/qoute]

Yes. A lot of rich people are obsessed with their wealth, and this affects their capacity to comprehend and concieve. Not all, though. Some good ones also exist that are as normal as anyone else.

No, the strong doesn't need to crush the weak or alike to feel strong, but the weak doesn't need to feel crushed either just because the "driven" and the wealthy ones exist. Regarding power, in today's times, power differential is felt by the oppressed not just due to the real oppresion caused by the powerful ones, but also due to the feeling of inferiority among the oppressed ones; the feeling that they generate themselves. It needs to be sorted both ways IMO. Specially on SN, braggers should be allowed to brag, if they like. As long as they are not mocking the not-so-rich ones, it shouldn't get anyone's cat mewing.

Holy Ganges! For a minute I thought I entered Joz's Pancakes thread by mistake!

So, you had no tummy troubles? That's really good! Your stomach must be really tough for digesting 21 pancakes at ease.

Yes.

Many wealthy people have worked hard to materialise their dreams, and I appreciate them for that. Even if they inherited their wealth, good on them. They have every right to enjoy it, and feel good about it.

But, I'd also like to add that I don't find myself unfortunate either because I don't have what rich have. I used to have much more than what I have now, but I walked away from that money driven scene. It made me miserable. Even when I love Porche, I won't utilise my "drive" to get a Porche for myself, or a big house with a lot of land etc. I am perfectly happy with what I have. Four chipped mugs and a burnt pan. Sorted.

David, I like you as a person. The fact you favour an ugly car does not impress me. YOU as a person do. I like you. Not what you drive. There is a hell of a lot of snobbery on SN and I do not believe most of it
