Choices choices, do I go with this consideraby strengthened from standard 'pegged' H6 block with 14mm bolt conversion that I have ready to drop in.....

Or my new 'bells and whistles' fully closed deck block which has been done to my own design via Alyn at AS Performance Which still has to be converted to 14mm studs, bored, honed and decked before I can start to build it....

Is the pegged setup not just as good as it supports the liner from top to bottom rathe than just at the top like the CDB.

How about a pinned block with the closed deck insert? Infact just fill the water jacket with molten metal and the drill out minor holes for water ways

the 'insert' offers very similiar support to a factory CDB block..........

CDB version Andy, the amount of NOS you're gonna run will just pop the liners between the pegs

Building both is not an option at this time as I only have one stroker crank (£3k) and one set of 6 high rpm stroker rods (£1k)
I have pistons for both blocks, one set at 97mm for the CDB and one set high compression ceramic coated 97.5mm currently built into the pegged block which was stripped over the winter for the 14mm stud conversion.
Plan is to move ahead with the CBD in the mean time, it needs decked, then machined out for the thickwall sleeves, fit sleeves, deck sleeves, machine for 14mm studs, bore and hone to suit 97mm pistons, modify and fit studs. Up here this means using 3 different machine shops for a decent job in each area!
If I can get this sorted within 2 weeks then I'll strip the pegged block for its crank and rods and build into the CDB. Any later and its cutting it too fine as I have different cams to set up on the dyno and that can be very time consuming.

Looking awesome although I don't understand most of the mechanical stuff lol can you explain what you mean by "decked"

Best of luck with the build

Decked - machining flat of the block face (or deck) where the cylinder head bolts on.

Mechanical genius Andy, who invents technology such as pegging ect? Is it technology used years ago on different types of cars or do you Subaru guys invent a cure for each problem.

What are thickwall sleeves? Is there a thread explaining all this machining work?

Also how much do you take off with the Hone?

Cheers

Pegging the bores has been used for many years now on Subarus. Closed decking is popular with big power Hondas and in the past few years has been applied to the 4 cyl Impreza but I'm pretty confident this is the only one that has ever been done that is fully closed ie including the block bolt access holes and using drillings instead of stress raising slots for cooling ports.

Followed you're build on 22b Andy. Thats gonna be some motor when its finished. Watching you're youtube videos, it looks like its spinning its wheels all the way up the strip. And thats at 1.5bar. Once run in, how much boost do you think the new build will handle ? Good luck at Marham BTW

Andy,
Whats the reson behind "decking" the block, is it just to ensure a better mating of Block/Gasket/Heads? I take it with the block being decked and the heads being skimmed its going to cause havoc deciding on head gasket thickness?

Andy, can I ask what your plans are for gearbox and clutch considering the power you could be getting to? Will a 6 speed still be capable of handling over 1000bhp? I know we have seen them last ok on big power cars but this could be pushing the boundaries somewhat.

Love the spec and car so far. Great project this.

Thanks. Andy

Thanks Intending to run circa 2.2 bar boost if I use the pegged block, maybe up to 2.5 bar on the closed deck if I get it ready in time.

I need to deck it to ensure the closed deck insert sits flush, then after linering, the liners need decked and will be left sitting slightly proud of the deck to increase clamping load in this area. Yes it all needs to be calculated in line with piston height and gasket thickness.

Thanks I bought a 6 speed Modena sequential last year for TOTB but it was delayed and never made it in time (hence low boost for TOTB on the 5 speed) Clutch is a 3 plate Helix race unit, designed for just over 1000lbft torque, still to be proven though!

Been watching this on 22b, great build and will be exciting to see what it can do in the future.
