The coming of the messiah? Trinity - Magdalene, Cypher -Judus....yada yada..too obvious perhaps?
...Morpheous as John the Baptist. Thomas (doubting) A. Anderson (literal translation is Son of Man) and Neo (meaning new and an anagram of One) being reborn in to belief and so on and so forth. I've never read one, but I understand there are dozens of books dedicated to it. I see Plato's Allegory of the Cave in there and a quick Google tells me so do others. The only original thought I can add is that the Wachowski brothers are heavily influenced by JRR Tolkien who in turn was influenced by Owen Barfield (one of the 'Inklings' along with CS Lewis) and he was heavily influenced by Rudolph Steiner's Anthroposophy. For me, Anthroposophy is a central theme and this has its roots in the mystery religions and the western mystery religions were and are heavily influenced by Plato's allegory, so that all ties in nicely. I see the films as an expression of speculative esoteric Christianity via the mythopoeia genre.
Wow let's take biblical archetypes, dress them up in sexy-sci fi outfits, and set it in a digital future where reality is obviously in need of questioning, and then everyone can say we are really clever?

Chronicles of Narnia, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars?

The first two are nice kids books (loved them as a kid) but that is about it. As for Star Wars, Alec Guinness himself said it was banal crap (I am probably paraphrasing there).

Any mythopoeia, other than Bladerunner, which you don't simply sweep aside? How do you rate Goethe and Shakespeare and Blake?

Neo was Jesus and Carrie Ann Moss was totally smoking hot back in 1999.
I read the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? when at school. Is the film any good then? I think I watched a dodgy pirate copy once and it didn't do anything for me. Maybe I should try that again?
It was made to sell the new disc format DVD. They went into a meeting and said, "Here mate we need a totally bustin' film to show of our new format that will also have added extras on the disc that really screw with peoples heads that think they can find meaning in films." and the director said, "weeker!"
All this has happened before, and all of it will happen again.
