The MY97 Type R was built to order from Jan 1997, so I cannot help with numbers manufactured.
Some had the boot roundel celebrating the 1996 manufacturers championship victory & 555 seats.
HTH
In September 1995 Subaru released a car called a STI V2 555. This was available in either 4 door or 5 door and with paint code 53C and is know as a MY-C series car.
That is not what you have.....
In Japan car were not branded by model year like here, they were given letters.
In September 1996 they released the V3, ( MY-D series). For the first time the Impreza turbo was available in 2 door trim. They had the normal V3 type R available along with a couple of special limited editions. The 555 was one and available in blue (not sure of paint code but believe it was sonic blue).
The other was a signature edition, available in bright yellow with dark grey wheels.
Both cars were identical to the normal V3 type R except for the paint colour.

So would mine of been a signature edition ? Being a originally a yellow type r ?
Yes I would assume so buddy, however the only thing that made it a signature edition was the yellow paint and dark grey wheels. Yours now has neither so passing it off as one could be difficult come sale time.

What more could you want than the brochure for that model from Subaru ?
To me that brochure is advertising the 'signature edition'. Note the yellow paint work and dark coloured wheels. Some 'could' take the pictures as equipment issued in that special edition and not the entire range.

The brochure is advertising what you are calling "signature" edition....
Would you like to know which other two colours are available on the brochure ?
