it passed ages ago high fuel costs/consumption and high tax is killing them,after the remaining classics have been chaved to death, the clean well maintained and modded cars will be the only ones left and will demand a premium just like the escort rs turbos and cosworths are today.

All this talk of classics being chavy and owned by scum just makes me want to sell mine although iv done my best to modify tastefully and generally maintain and keep it in good condition and hopefully as others have said fully restore it it's 17 yr old now and still drives great which is testament to the Subaru of that time but when these topics pop up I just want to sell it but on the other hand it's a great car that I like to look after and enjoy, f@cking Chavs have ruined it for us classic owners

Reading this I must be more stupid than I thought
I bought a new STi sedan thinking it was pretty good value
My wife uses ours for the daily commute in traffic and gets 23mpg
Pair that to the performance and handling and I think you have a good package
If the exchange rates were not so poor the price would be nearer 30k which is about right when the Hawkeye sti was 27k
You now get Sat nav, bluetooth, cruise, awesome seats and brilliant security system
All in I am happy with ours

Don't worry if you have a fine example well done (no dump valve ) and don't hang round McD you will be ok
Just bear with us a couple more years untill the chavs ruin them

Mate, if you like the car enjoy it. Bollocks to what anyone else says. I have my classic and I couldn't care less what anyone else thinks of it. It's a good fun car.

Equally I am forever ******* the hatch as I think it is just about the most hideous thing on the road, but I would hope if the owners like it they couldn't care less what someone else says about it!

We can't all like the same thing or have the same opinion, good thing really as life would then be very dull!

Classics are definitely becoming a rarer car and will no dout be a enthusiasts car or a track car.

I for one am going to be getting another, if not a few classic shells/completes eventually and build them for race and spare.

I am in the process of renewing all the old and worn bits on my V5 STi. Getting the mechanical side done first and then the exterior.

It may take two years or five but I know that it will be un-molested, looked after and not go phhhhssssst every time I change gear.

It's easy to see where the market is going when so many are being broken, eventually demand will outstrip supply and the only way is up.

I`ll be keeping my 20 Year Old Classic Red V1 Type-RA.. My 5th and by far best Impreza I`ve owned... Still rust free and on it`s original first coat.... Scooby`s this old will be as rare as Cabbage Patch Doll Poop........... Will be going down the lines of removing all non RA body bits and returning to original factory look.....

I think the time to buy a Classic is now... Hunt down the oldest, well kept, rust free model out there while there cheap as chips...

Isnt Subaru missing the boat by not bringing out a high performance diesel STi? or STD? Surely the torque figure can be virtually the same as an STi but with the benefits of better economy?

The boxer diesel as it stands is too underpowered for me to change to one, but bring out a diesel in an Sti body kit with extra oomph i could be very tempted.

Quite agree. A Diesel with good spec and looks would have won over a few customers.

Part of the problem is residuals, when I went from my "Cat" to a Prodrive "bug" they offered me £13k. how much is a 5 year old STI worth today ?

And as for price I paid £27K in 2002 so £33K is about right with inflation.
The chav image isn't likely to be noticed by someone buying the new saloon, IMHO. Who would compare it to a car from the early 90's ?

Sorry, but Citroen & Peugeot never made a road car to match their competition models since RWD was ruling the roost in the WRC, add FORD for the last 15 years too !

Sadly I won't be earning enough to buy another new car, so I'm out of the market. Will just have to add a few bits to refresh mine, and plod to and from work...

Sti and diesel don't seem to go together somehow. Even if Subaru developed a diesel power plant that came somewhat close to giving the performance of the current Sti models (340R & £320R etc), unless they have a magic wand, the fuel consumption would be little better than around 30mpg. There would be little financial gain, particularly with diesel prices as they are. The idea of big torque figures is all well and good, but if the engine runs out of puff around 4k rpm, performance is never going to warrant the Sti badge.

I agree with this. What the hell are Citroen playing at? They constantly win the WRC every year, and yet they haven't used that to up their image to their customer base. If they brought out a car to match their rally model, and promoted it they would be onto a winner. Look what happened to Peugeot with the group b 205. Who had heard of them prior to that?

The WRC isn't exactly mainstream anymore though so I doubt this approach of publicity would be anywhere near as affective as it was back then
