Opinions would be the Cometic Gaskets and their liability to fail. Opinions also seem to be split as to whether I could get away with just pulling the engine up and changing the gaskets or whether it's a risk now water has got onto the bearings.
I chased a V3 long engine today as a temporary measure but it sold yesterday.

Hmmm, I would rather strip the whole thing and give it a good check over to be honest, I dont think headgaskets would "just fail"

Cometic have a good name in other circles, so it seems a bit odd that they "just fail" on a subaru. Id want to give the engine a full inspection and find out what it is that has caused the failure of it it is just the gasket.

Its alot of time and effort to do the HG to find out there was an issue somewhere else, it might cost alot and be a right pain in the ****, but I just dont see there is any other way of doing it....

Put them on FB, then right click and copy the image URL.

[img] [/img] either side of the link with no spaces for them to show on the thread.

That's what I do most of the time.

I've done that with a few pictures. I put a load of pictures of a Ferrari meet on pistonheads and my bandwidth went crazy. I've edited them out now and they're back.
I've been offered a few engines but the timing of all this is just awful.

Glad you got it all in and working though! I bet it feels good after all this time!
that is nothing compared to a wrx i was doing a rebuild on a few months ago which has an LPG kit fitted he was running four standard fuel injectors and 8 gas injectors it took forever labeling all the pipes for it

We call it "The Beast", a Renault Scenic Diesel we picked up a year ago for £450.

How different would it be though as that has changed is the engine internals. It will still have the FMIC, same injectors etc?.

Fueling for a 2.0 is different to a 2.1 for starters.

It would possibly be ok to pootle about in, ask Simon.

Are you sure its head gasket? Could be bore wash causing the raised oil level and low compressions? Get the injectors tested to confirm. A little bit of condensation in the oil filler tube could be nothing.

Edit- also you could drain the oil into a large enough clear container and let it settle for a few days to see if you get a visible separation of oil and water.

Thanks Jason, the 2.1 is out and I'm slowly putting the spare WRX engine in at present as it's a been hectic few weeks. My mrs scenic failed its MOT so have had to sort that, neice born yesterday and my birthday today. Back to work Monday though so I should get some time tomorrow. No problem's permitting once I am able to use the car as a daily again I should get time to look at the 2.1 and see whats up. Bore wash is definately an option. Would this effect both the bores and the rings? If it is that, and it's 92.5mm already, then unless I go down the liner route the block has had it?
