Advice sought . . . . . .
Buy a Scooby. You've saved hard for the money. You only live once so enjoy it.
If I get worried about the bills etc then I just go for a drive and it all makes sense again
Oh and not wanting to scare you but I used to average £400 on fuel per month for personal use. Work is only 4 miles from my house but I was going the LONG way round, adding 50-60 miles to my journey home from work
just for the fun of it. Don't do that now, I save the money for mods. Which is something else you may want to consider budgeting for.
Hey ANDY330, he says he wants his car to last for 8-10 years
Sorry mate just taking the pee. Nothing against cossies, still look good but probably need more looking after than a 2 year old Scoob.

I went from a Vectra 2.0 SRi to a UK MY00 Impreza about 18 months ago.
Vectra:
For:
Quieter & smoother on the motorway (more refined motorway cruiser)
More gadgets
Better Interior fittings & dashboard
More franchised dealers
Against:
Will be worth nothing in 8 years, even if it's still running, which is highly unlikely - compare 8 year old Cavaliers with 8 year old Imprezas.
Less reliable
Impreza:
For:
Handling & grip - very few cars will get close on the bends. If it rains, expect to be held up by motorbikes.
Performance - reading 0-60 times and bhp figures will not prepare you for the raw surge of power the first time you wind one up.
Reliability - don't believe everything you read about failing engines.
Depreciation - prices have fallen, but no worse than most other cars. They still hold their value well (I've heard of P reg £17k 2.0 SRi's going for £2k now!!
)
Exclusivity - No-one will ever say "so what's that then" or "I bet that goes like a rocket" to you if you own a Vectra.
Against:
Running costs - Guzzles petrol, higher insurance
Security - You will need to buy after-market security, such as a disklok or barrier deadlock.
If having a car that lasts 8 years is important to you, then I would suggest you buy an Audi or a VW Golf. If performance & handling is important to you, you will sign on the dotted line after your first test drive, it's as simple as that.
Do try UK and Jap WRX/STi's for a comparison. I found the STi too hard & too laggy for my driving style, I prefer the quicker pick up of the smaller turbo, but it's a personal thing.
Buy an Impreza. You obviously want one!

I was in the same position 6 months ago, do I buy a Focus 2.0 Zetec ESP or a Scoob?
In the end, I thought sod it, I only live once and chose the latter - and only regret it when I have to fill her up!
Its the only car I've ever had that is cleaned every week and for which I often just go out for a country lane thrash for the sheer fun of it.
buy one - if you can afford the fuel bill, it will put a regular smile on your face!

Will I be wishing in 2 to 3 years time, when the electrics go wrong on the GSI or the 'infamous' Vectra stalling/rough running engine problem appears, that I should of bought a 'scoob'?
I doubt I'll be in the same position (money wise) ever again, due to impending wedding, house and then kids.

Blimey, if that was your problem, why didn't you say so? It's so simple.
If you made a mistake, can you sell the Vectra and get a Scoob? No.
Can you sell the Scoob and get a Vectra? Yes.
Next week, my answer to the Middle East crisis...

Picked up my first Impreza last Friday - a 99 4 door - spotless with 12k on the clock for £15k.
I'm using it as a company car - and was really pretty impressed by the fuel consumption. A LOT better than I thought it was going to be.
As for the drive -
well, it was above and beyond my wildest expectations. It is simply the BEST car I have ever driven - and the list includes Honda S2000, 911, Type R's, etc, etc. The impreza just blows them away.
I did test drive a 97 STi3 on import - which actually felt a little tooo raw, though the acceleration was amazing.
Get the scooby m8 - forget about the Vectra (my pal just bought a Mondeo ST200 and is feeling a little silly now he's had a shot in the Scooby. I was a little cruel letting him drive it though, as it was bound to kill the enjoyment he would get out of the Ford!).

Well let's look at the evidence:
You haven't got much money (or might not have soon)...
You want it to last 8 years...
You want to use it as a family car...
Findings:
Cost of cars is roughly the same. Cost not an issue there. Insurance on Impreza's will only get worse as they become more available to the "max power brigade". Running costs on a Vectra will be cheaper. Come on, it's a Vauxhall - not exactly known for costing a lot to run...
Lasting 8 years - hmmmm. The Vauxhall would get there: my old Astra (1989) is still going strong with only a bit or rust the main problem. Subaru - would probably get there as well and probably in better shape. I think things are too early to say on this as there aren't many Imprezas of that age around...
Family car: most wives/girlfriends really don't like caning around at ludicrous speed, cornering very quickly etc. The Vectra would undoubtedly be a more suitable (if not as "cool") family car.
I think any objective person would suggest that the Vectra is more suitable for what you want. However, there is a large "desire" factor here. The scoob has a much more desirable image (although it seems to be losing it rapidly) and would get you more car park respect.
You've asked the question on a Subaru BBS. Surprisingly the posts mostly suggest the Impreza.
Is that answer you really wanted all along?

Ok, here's my tuppence worth!
My fiance's company car was up for renewal a while ago, and as she wanted something slightly sporty, we borrowed a Vectra GSi for a weekend test drive. I still can't believe the claimed 193bhp, it didn't feel quick at all to me, in fact in a purely scientific experiment
I 'tested' it on a stretch of dual carriageway against a friend's Mondeo 2.0 16v Si, and, up to 80mph there was very little in it.
We tried a Mondeo ST200 also, and this was a far nicer car all round...
But neither came anywhere near my scoob!
In short, if you enjoy 'spirited' driving, want a car that brings a childish grin to your face every time you floor the throttle, and you can stomach the running costs, buy a scoob, you will NOT regret it!!
Oh, BTW, my fiance ended up with an Astra Coupe 2.2, and that is just as quick as a Vectra GSi!

a) My wife loves the Scoob it makes her feel safe, power to get out of problems, ok brakes and surefooted handling.
b) My wife loves the Scoob, she likes it when blokes see her in it.
c) The kids love the Scoob, they don't get car sick in it like other cars.
d) I love the Scoob because.... where do I begin....
-Fuel economy, not the best, 20 - 25
-Looks... I love them
-Practicality, a family of 4 for a two week holiday driving to France including bedding plenty of room (and I have the four door)
-Serving costs, as nothing seems to go wrong there are no hidden extras.
-Build quality not BMW, but well screwed together if not a little basic.
and on and on....

Along with the creation of this thread, I also created one on 'www.vectra-sport.com', so I could get a comparison.
After reading what everybody has said on both boards, there can be only one choice . . . Impreza Turbo it is !
Your right that I did want that answer all along, but 14K is a lot of money to me (might not be to you ;-) ) so I have to be sure on what I'm going to buy. What better way than using a 'Subaru' BBS to get what I needed ?
Even if the running costs get too high after 3 to 4 years, and I have to sell the 'work of art', at least I can say I've owned one.
Lucky for me I've got a luuuverly fiance that wants me to have a 'scooby'! Not sure if she'll feel the same once she's had a spin tho.
Thanks everyone for helping me make the right choice.
Please keep the comments coming.

Sorry mate I'm really not having a dig or anything...
I think the upshot of it is if you can afford it, and you want to (and your fiancee is cool with it) then go for it.
I guess it's easy for me as I had a scoob until recently so I've kinda forgotten how amazing these things are and I just remember the costs of it (60 quid+ per weekend fuel, just because I loved driving it!). I just got past the elation feeling and started thinking more about how much it was costing me, the negative sides to its image etc.
It really is the sort of car you should experience at least once in your life so if you can do it, and it won't be a problem for you to lose it in 6months-1 year, then cool go for it!
Good luck with whatever you choose...

MY advice is - GET THE SCOOB!!!!
I part-ex'd our 306 Xsi for an MY95 5dr (family man too).
Test drove the GSI - hmmm....zzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Big boot though..... bigger than the Scoob.
Insurance - you gets what you pays for.....
I'll be keeping mine for the next 5 years or so too (5yrs old already)
Plus there is always THAT grin

I've just been reminded of the blistering performance due to driving the wife's Ibiza Special (880cc!!!) and having a replacement DTM exhaust put on mine)
DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT DO IT
Dan - VERY happy Scoob driver.
