PS4 should it be simple or complicated.

Shaun, the reason that Blu Ray overtook HD DVD was quite simple and a master stroke from Sony; it was part of the PS3's integral hardware and so the user did not need to spend £xxx to intergrate it into their system.
The Blu Ray format was better supported from the off as with the PS3 it's user base outgrew HD DVD from the very first day of the PS3 release.
Remember that the PS3 and a stand alone Blu Ray player were about the same price when the PS3 was released, a bit of a no brainer really and with firmware updates the PS3 is still one of the better Blu Ray players on the market.

It's just a shame that BD will never be the replacement to DVD..... but that's another discussion.

Not had any issues on my PS3 fat 80gb and mine gets battered every day gaming wise. Consoles are never going to be ahead of PC's at the rate components develop. Even at release Sony/MS arent going to be using the best components as they are also the most expensive.
I was PC for years and got sick of having to upgrade something every year or so and even then not being able to play everthing in ultra settings. £300 on a ps3 and no need to spend anything else. Top notch graphics are not the be all and end all of the gaming world.

It reminds me of the Betmax vs VHS battle in which Sony backed the losing format; I think they learned from that and made sure that Blu Ray would overtake HD DVD by giving the purchasers of a PS3 'added value'.
It is just good that for once the better format won out, and that was despite HD DVD being available for a while before Blu Ray hit the stores.
Personally I haven't bought one DVD since the introduction of Blu Ray and I have in excess of 120 films on Bu Ray, I mean once you have seen a 1080P film then why would you go back to viewing films any other way?

I wouldn't entertain buying a PC as a gaming machine again, they are just too expensive to keep up with the changing requirements and virtually as soon as you've installed a component it becomes outdated and it's replacement will be touted as the new 'must have'.

I hope they make it stylish again like the fats as they look sooo much better especially when vertical. That said Im amazed how cheap the slims are now - 160gb slim was £150 last time I was in Sainsburys. PS4 might be the first time ever I buy a console on release....
Mine sits in the office hooked up to a lowly 22" LCD monitor as I cant get on with FPS on my 42" plasma plus I can play to my hearts content in the office without the mrs wanting to watch eastenders

Wait until Babies/kids arrive Simon (Assuming you'll have them one day) the above post will be a mere happy memory
Got up to 92% of Uncharted 3 about 3 weeks ago, did the first 30 mins of Battlefield 3 and haven't had the time to look at either since no doubt there will be multiple updates which will scuper another evenings gaming as well......
When they've grown up I will even complete GTA IV

Haha no chance. Me and the mrs are both in full agreement we dont ever want kids. Only addition to our family will be a new scooby for me and a horse for her.
Think Ive done about 130hrs on BF3 since release. Thought I was not so hot at it until I played around with my router setup which was via homeplugs and now is straight Cat5 cabled to router and I can kill with ease - its life a diff game. Still only Colonel Lvl 7 - and 100 is the top rank I believe
Uncharted 3 is coming from santa so will play over Xmas as the mrs loves watching and is actually pretty damn good at seeing the hidden doors etc so we make a good team.

I have a couple of BD players yet I have only ever bought probably 10 discs. I have 100's of DVD's and continue to buy them over BD's.
Why you may ask......
After ten minutes (if that in reality) of watching a film, do I think "That looks awesome in 1080p" and I'm more interested in the film itself.
DVD encoding is pretty damn good nowadays, coupled with a decent DVD player and proper video scaler.... makes for a good enough experience for me. Sound is as important and as long as I can decode to DD I'm happy.
Then you also have the price difference in the software.
All of this is the reason why BD will not replace the DVD imo.

The main issue will be price. BR are getting closer and closer to DVD price for new films. In fact many are triple play now and only £3-4 more so you can give a family member the DVD copy. No one is going to not buy BR if they are the same or only slightly more than DVD.
HD audio is far superior as well not just the picture.

HD audio and awesome picture, never bought a DVD since getting my PS3. I enjoy the film of course but I notice things in the picture quality all through a film too.......

I too have a blue ray player and still buy mainly DVDs the reason is cost, I'm not bothered if blue rays come with a DVD version as well, I don't care I just want to watch the film.
I quite often watch a lot of films over virgin on demand too, costs £4 and most films once I've seen them once I won't watch them again.
Will be a long time before blue rays take over DVDs if at all as I suspect a lot will go to downloading an on demand services first.

So if DVD is say £10 and Blu ray version inc DVD copy and digital version is £13 you wouldnt buy the latter? I would and I think most people would. The market trends back that up ie DVD sales are dropping fast and blu ray are increasing year on year with a 40% + increase in Europe.
I think 3D will be a big part as well. Im no expert but I believe you can only get 3D films on blu ray? So what I hear you say - well Im sure I read some of the big players like Sony saying that by 2015 all tv's sold above a certain size (ie not your dinky little kitchen set) will have 3D capability.

£13 for new release BD is not the norm so don't pull that one! lol
As many of the comments say against those two articles.... lower the price and you'll get your adoption. Plain and simple.
Even on your example..... I'm not paying 30% more for something that has no great benefit imo (not for that premium anyhow).

Your right most are £15 with DVD £10. I dont know why they dont do a lite version with just the BR on its own as a midpoint.
Lets bookmark this and revisit the figures in 2015
Im off to watch Terminator Salvation in HD with HD audio. Which btw is less than £6 on Amazon for extended cut blu ray - absolute bargain. Worth that just for the opening attack on skynet scene

And you can tell that much difference with HD Audio over and above DD?!
You must have one **** of a set-up or awesome ears! Lol
I truly believe the lossless nature of HD is a minor benefit.... The most important thing is the mastering method more than the lack of compression IMO.

HD Audio on my Yamaha 767 7.1 setup with Tannoy speakers is noticably better than DD, the surround effects are much more defined.
And if you know where to look you can get most new BD's for 12-15.

What about voice recognition for games fellas.I know that it might not work properly, then again it could work. That means you can do most things by voice command, which leaves more buttons free.Would work great in arcade shooting games, when you need to reload etc.
