Quick diesels ?
At £3000 buy on condition and what is local to you. Most 'sporty' dervs at this money will require some spends. My cousin runs a E46 320d sport touring, and he's had to replace wishbones, drop links, prop coupling, injector seals (special part required to fit/replace), exhaust, intercooler pipe work etc etc and its due a DMF and clutch - it's second. It's a 2000MY with 120k I think. A 'mint' car too, so eyes wide open!!!!
For all of the reasons above I would always try and run a petrol over a diesel - half the torque tends to not only aid your driving technique but saves on the wearables, is often cheaper to insure, and certainly cheaper to buy....

On a serious note: My Mrs and daughter both have Mondeo diesels. My Mrs has had to have a clutch but my daughters has needed nothing in the year she has had it. They are both 04 plates on well over 100k and you'd get quite a good one for 3k.
Didnt know SAAB had VAG 1.9tdi. Good shout on the 93 though. Pretty much a Vectra underneath by all accounts. I looked at them for while.
If the budget was higher Id say Insignia. Hired one for the day and it was a great car
A big diesel engine is always going to be quick and a 330d will toast a 330i the later 330d have 204hp and 6 manual gears.

Pretty sure the 9-3 comes with the 1.9CDTi from Vauxhall/Fiat as well TBH.
I think the OP is going to struggle getting that sort of return for the Scoob and even harder trying to negotiate an swap deal that he'll be happy with for something that'll return two or three times the MPG these days.
Good luck though.

Grant

+1 from me. Got the Passat Estate (51 plate) and it may be fairly boring to look at but it keeps going. Cambelts at 60K but fairly easy to do yourself. Mine usually just gets serviced at 10K miles and forgotten in between. Though it did fail the MOT recently on a brake imbalance. £8 (that's eight quid
) for two front calipers off of an A4 at the scrappie and all was well.40(ish) mpg around country lanes/town. Top 40s on the m'way. Plenty tunable as well.

I'd bypass a BMW for the reasons outlined above-unless you've got a warranty in place, repairs are expensive.
I pay a stupid amount for a fully comp warranty on a 335d.
On your budget,I'd certainly try and find a mondeo st tdci-very nice looking motors, leather with a high level of spec.
Both the saloon and estate look fantastic IMO.

I sold my old 406 110 estate & bought a citroen c5 2.2 hdi exclusive estate.
I actually miss the old pug!
40 mpg (even with 6 gears) & I forgot about the dearer tax band as well.
Shoot me now!
I also bought an old classic sport wagon for the winter & it is the preferred mode of transport!
It never lets me down, does in the 30's to the gallon, everything works & it's easy to park..

So your looking at 30K a year and maximum of £3K for an MY00 in as good condition as yours is. Bare in mind that I'm considering £5K for 2005 WRX SL with 60K miles which could probably have another £500 lopped off depending on the sellers position.
I wouldn't want to buy a £3K 330D. It could hit you with a bill probably half the value of the car. Auto box lets go, injectors replacing, swirl flap shenannigans. From what I've read the 330D is an engine that really doesn't suit the DIY enthusiast and lots of the work required is dealer/specialist only.
For £3K, I'd look at a Diesel Leon - cheaper than a Golf but exactly the same underneath. You might get a Cupra TDI with that too.

That said he may have just been unlucky, drives like a cvnt too so probably doesn't help.
I've really started to turn off the more modern stuff. Every manufacturer seems to have had their run of expensive issues with newer tech diesel cars. Whether it be DPFs clogging, injectors breaking or pumps packing up.

I have a 54 plate Audi A4 TDi 130 sport 6 speed manual
105,000miles and apart from tyres, brakes & normal servicing its had nothing spent on it apart from a wiper motor & arms which siezed up.
Returns 42mpg all day long driving it like hoon and 46+ on a good motorway trip and still going strong, not even a clutch replacment!
goes well - people who've been in the car assume its been chipped but its bog standard out of the factory - holds the road reasonably well to.
up the VAG
Cheers

Just sold our 530d Sport
100,000 miles, full BMWSH, only a couple of very minor mechanical issues in 8 years. Very mechanically sound.
It has rust on one wing, a dent in the back where the paint has come off, both front alloys have minor buckling in them from a speed bump and we still got well over £4k for it. Just goes to show quality, even old quality, still has some value in it. Since we bought it it has depreciated at £3k per annum - so not bad value for a quality motor.

****reon c5 posssibly the worst car ever made anti pollution fault leads to stuttering and random cutting out some people have spent upwards of 4k trying to get it fixed and never resolved the issue. I HATE citreon and Renault they are all heaps of ****.
