I think you should get it out, whip the heads off and have a look at the tops of the pistons,if they are ok you can just replace the heads and away you go.

Everyone seems to think it's a the law to build a forged lump that will take 450bhp just because the engine is out, it takes 4/5 hours to get the engine out (the first time) but it can be done in 2hrs, i have taken longer to do an exhaust.

There is no need to split the bottom end and replace anything if it was fine before the belt let go.

And as your only looking for standard power, why go to the expense.

you can fix it for £200.

And if you fancy upgrading later do some research and decide what parts you want and collect them over a few months..

+1 for a straight repair !
Heads go for around £50. MHG's / Composite AKA Cometic are the gaaskets to use.

If you are keeping the car then your taking a big risk not refreshing the bottom end, at that mileage the big end bearings will probably be getting close to failure. If you refresh it now a new set of bearings will be a very good investment and cheapish to do.

Buy a cheap rusty or damaged UK car for £800-1500, easily done. Rob the engine, strip the rest job done

Your 95 is only worth £1500 with a working engine.
