I see. I'm pretty sure Ian the fluid was original. The TD was the end of June 2010, making the car 6 years old at the time. Mileage was very low at ~22K

fluid should be changed at least every 18 months , sooner for hard drivers or those doing track days , fluid absorbs water , and this turns to steam when temps get too high causing the pedal to hit the floor.
Changing the fluid more frequently will keep water out of the system , so wouldn't boil and keep the pedal up ,

As a rule of thumb , pedal hitting the floor is a fluid problem , a hard pedal but the brakes not working is a pad fading
