I would concentrate on just completing it and not worry about your time, find your pace and let your time work itself out. It would be a huge acheivement just to complete it
Always take advantage of a sports massage if on offer after any half. Hurts like buggery at the time but does the biz.

Sub 3 hours for a first marathon would be hugely impressive in my book.

I did my first marathon this year and clocked 4:35. At 30km I was on course for 4:00 to 4:10 but the wheels fell off big-style. I stopped for a call of nature between 29 and 30km, after which things start to sieze up. I would (will) do another marathon now I understand more about what my body needs to run for that time (eg more carbs).

Going to work on my half marathon times a bit first - set a new PB in Liverpool this year of 1:51 so going under 1:45 is my next target.

You need more carbs Chris? Best one I've heard all week!

Good effort in Liverpool though

That queue probably did the damage.

I just did my first proper run. 5.25 miles in 49 minutes which is a pace of 9.24 minute/mile. This is my first run for about 20 years (did a couple of warm ups last week)

Good man, dont peak too soon though. Id find a training plan for a beginner and stick to it.

Agreed Les, if only the ache from running too far too early. Itll put you off for ever. On the same note, I started back on leg exercises last week after 5 months out with a torn muscle in my ***! I was in pain from Tuesday morning to Saturday!

I think you are doing it the right way Paul

concentrate on getting your running speed up, then go for the distance/time

I always make the mistake of concentrating on distance/time first-- you then become a "plodder"

below is a good time/pace predictor chart

http://www.users.on.net/~klima/rkcalc_mi.htm

and remember, in a marathon the race begins at 20 miles

*Update* after 6 months.

I dont have a regular schedule due to my shifts, but try to run/ exercise bike three times a week.

My PB's are.
Half Marathon (only done one in training) 1:39:50
10K 44:40
5K 21:14

The half marathon was 7:39 pace.

what's the best time for a guy of 40 to do the marathon?

Under 3 hours is VERY good going!! You'd need to average over 8mph!
