If it is a classic JDM car, it will have a code to match one in the above link.

If not, it's a UK car (as above, it can't be both!), not STi, JDM, WRX, R or RA.

he's had that many Imprezas he needs a sticker in the rear window saying 'subaru' so he doesn't forget what make of car it is.

 

I'd say it was a uk turbo 2000 (judging by the rear lights)

Get him to take a photo of the heater controls (tell him the type R and rb5 are the only cars to have the slide switch for the heater controls )

 

Looks like an import to me. No manual aerial on drivers side pillar.
