Boost on the standard map is 1.1-1.2bar. Boost on my car is 1.4-1.45bar. The TFSI engine naturally runs lean hence it's good fuel consumption but as you'll know, lean means hot. The below plot is from my manual car, top line 1.45bar, middle line 1.55bar

So less is indeed more, you can see EGT protection kick in there, more boost, higher EGT's, ecu protection kicks in and drops lambda thus AFR's to cool and control EGT. My manual car had TBE on it hence why the figures are a little higher than 410, 421bhp on the plot above with the Milltek TBE.

Best is to run 1.45bar max. As to characteristics, you can see yourself from the plot how soon it comes on boost, fully spooled early on at 2300rpm, boosts around 1.35 here, 1.45 through the middle and 1.25 at 6000+, around 1.2 at 6800 red line.

The car needs to be on the optional 19's for me, 18's just don't sit right and looks a little weeny so 19's it is. Suspension therefore a little bumpier, however, the car can be specced with mag ride which helps out a lot here. I don't have mag ride on mine and I have no complaints.

RS3 has already been tested at 3.8 to 60, 9.9 to 100 and 1/4m in 12.4 so a good set of figures there for a stock 335hp car. This was a UK topgear test...

Limited numbers though so may be difficult to get discount on these the same way you can on the TT

I guess this is ref the RS3 vs 1M video on YouTube?

I have no idea what that test was all about, very poor figures from both cars. I don't even think they used launch control going by the video footage. Don't worry, having quarter miled the TT, it's more likely to be like the TG test that I linked to above.

Thanks, needs a lot of boost to deliver the goods though, I wonder if you drove it hard whether EGT protection would kick in at your very slightly lower boost level? Better sounding time from that TG test. But if I have to spend the same to get an equivalent age/miles (to my GTR which is 12000 mile 24 months) TTRS DSG or RS3 including dealer margins, it might be a bit silly.

I've tested that John, done 10 hard launches at Crail last week within 3hrs, monitored the EGTs and all was good. Same with a load of back to back 30-130 runs and a couple of 160-170 runs. Couldn't get it to trip EGT protection on 1.45bar. Easy on 1.55 though, anything over 110-120 would trigger it on my car.

1.2 standard upto 1.45 isn't a great increase to be fair.

As to prices, last time I checked the Audi used car finder, there were 2 or 3 'new' 11 plate TTRS DSG on there for £46-47k, down from £53-54k spec. No RS3's though, I think they are going to be difficult to find as limited in numbers. RS3 is obviously slightly heavier and a little less aero in comparison to the TTRS but it is far more practical if you are needing space. RS3 starts at £39,980 I think and from what I have read comes with a better standard spec over the TTRS so probably not much additional spec required. As limited, probably a good bet for decent residuals.

So I would have to put in £10k to change to a DSG TTRS and then tune it to be 160 hp down on my GTR with a tune. I would only save £2k a year on fuel, tax, servicing, tyres, insurance though I reckon.

Going GTR>TTRS is stupid. However, TTRS>GTR is starting to look like a fairly natural progression. I have to say I'm gobsmacked at how fast the acceleration is on mitchy's vid.

I agree SB, I wouldn't swap a GTR for a TTRS unless I was wanting something a little smaller or to cut down on the running costs although I would swap my TT for a GTR if I could justify the additional running costs. John has said he doesn't get to use the GTR as much as what he'd like so it may be a consideration for a 'downgrade'. 1M/RS3 too, although I suspect the 1M would drive John nuts in the Scottish winter.

Always going to cost you to swap John, could be £30-32k though for a MY11 GTR if you are considering a swap.

Can't see much point in a my11 as the electronic changes to the engine and gearbox which are most of the differences between the cars I have covered and more, the hardware differences are minor interior and exterior cosmetics, larger discs, different cooling ducts, slightly different suspension. The difference in lap times from the new design Dunlops is similar to a previous difference between Dunlops and Bridgestones, and on the road I cannot tell the difference and don't have an issue with brakes or cooling, but the slightly more comfortable suspension would be nice, but not 30k which I can put towards building work.
