I wouldn't bother with XBMC on a new machine, fine for otherwise obsolete hardware.

No you do not need an xbox to make full use of XBMC. It was originally designed for the xbox, but it will run on OS X (as well as ATV, linux, Windows, and there is a Live CD of it as well)

It's just an app on OS X, so you can launch it whenever you want to use it.
