just had my 10k service, all fine

Swapped my stereo due to balance issue, had all fluids changed, brakes cleaned

asked about the odd blue smoke on startup and was all ok, common in boxer due to how they sit nothing to worry about, engine checked out ok 200 quid lighter in wallet

Common in a boxer engine due to how they sit? Sounds like BS mate. Mine doesn't spew blue smoke on startup n neither did any of my classics. I would take it somewhere independent and ask again.

when i say spew, bit of an over statement m8, only when its been spiritadly driven and only very slight but u see it, and only 3 times outa 10

alls well anyway and in warrenty so im ok, i had overfilled slightly the oil too

i still think Seals may be an issue, but overfilling wont help, but now its perfect i,ll monitor it

" The Official Line "

The car should only smoke at start-up. What happens is that because the engine has a 'flat' layout, ie the cylinders sit horizontally in the car instead of vertically, the oil in the cylinders lies in the bores instead of just draining down into the sump.

If the car is not started for some time this oil can seep past the piston rings and then burns on start-up. This should only involve a small amount of oil, and although sometimes if the engine has not run for some time the amount of smoke can be startling, it should clear quite quickly and not reappear.

It is normal and they do indeed 'all do that sir'

mmmm maybe if its sat for along time, I could understand that. But I've nvr seen it in any of mine, I know the layout n size of your engine is slightly different to older Imprezas, but they are all boxers at the end of day.

Tony, slightly off topic I know, however, what made you go for the 320R over say, Litchfields new Type 20? You have and will be modifying this car, but I was curious thats all. You test drove and posted your thoughts on the Type-20 when it came out didnt you? I was reading one of the posts earlier today.

Three reasons

1) it's a Saloon not a Hatch
2) Cost £32K 320R a std JDM saloon £36K??
3) 320R is my shopping car not a track toy. hopefully I'll be buying a track car sometime next year. which will have the T5NYW plate on

AST suspension is far more comfortble than the STD Spec C suspension, so "Modifying" it I lost suspension Waranty I've just saved Subaru UK from paying out on "suspension knock" bar from some cosmetics i'll be keeping it std.

If my "saloon" was doing track work, I wouldn't have bought a UK car it WOULD have to be a JDM.

two reasons

1) Quick Rack
2) 2.0ltr 8Krpm engine

IMHO

Tony

i also looked at this Mad, but i use mine for business, and if it was a 2.0L i would loose so much money on petrol it was insane. Company pay for my car on an allowance and give me pence per mile 26 27 cant rem for fuel. But for 2.0L you only get sub 20p

At present on a 130 Mile round trip i make 6 quid costs me 29 quid in fuel i get 35 quid back, ok we have running costs but we dont look at that do we

Tonys view is far more professional and proper though id have never thought of all that.

But i hazard a guess your not doing it for what i am, more for his views.

But his first Point saloon Hatch debate.
I had the Hatch before and it is by far more practical and i love them, BUT the Kudos will always be with the Saloon and as i have said on many occasions, and possible Don Tony may have seen also

Drive down a motorway and the amount of people that turn to look gives you a fuzzy feeling, they love the Saloons

3) 320R is my shopping car not a track toy. hopefully I'll be buying a track car sometime next year. which will have the T5NYW plate on Ahhh! Nice 1! A track toy as well, superb. lol.

Who fitted the AST's Tony? I was thinking of the normal STI but no point when 320R is same price eh? Although I wouldn't want rock hard suspension either. My WRX is hard enough, Ha

Fair enough. Can understand that. I must get a test drive sorted at least with the local Subaru stealer, I mean dealer.

I think you'll find they spent over £15K on cossi bits for the engine so should be OK for 500bhp maybe
New

Engine £15K
Brakes £2K
Spoilers £3k
Wheels £2K
Car £33K
Total £55,000

second hand guess timate IMHO

Engine £8K
Brakes £1K
Spoilers £1k
Wheels £1K
Car £29K
Total £40,000

Maybe a tad heavy with the pen

I dont know the individual values, but I think Tony is about right - its got:

Cosworth Pistons and con rods
ACL race bearings
Cosworth oil pump
Uprated head gaskets
Twin Scroll turbo
Hayward and Scott Stainless exhaust
800CC fuel injectors and uprated fuel pump
Rear spoiler and roof spoiler
AP 365MM brakes
AST adjustable suspension
White line Anti roll bars
19” Prodrive GT1 graphite alloys
STI Lip spoiler

Think its currently about 380BHP and does go rather nicely........

Ted, the reality is that 99% of the people turning round to look at your saloon won't know if they are looking at a hatch or a saloon. To the untrained eye, the only difference between them is the last few inches at the back. I think that their interest is due more to the fact that they only see them once in a blue moon and they wonder what the hell it is. As for my feelings, I prefer the appearance of the STi 330 S or R hatch to the saloon, but the presence of a big rear spoiler on the saloon does tip the balance in its favour.
