Holy CRAP!!

That's damned good service! You actually visit the Car/Bike/Boat 'individually' and do some form of tests and trials?

That is staggering - I just thought you looked it up like every other Oil Salesman in the land do ..... no, you are different - amazing service

Do you use happy shopper tyres on the basis that premium tyres are just a waste of money when any will do
Oil is no different, for a standard impreza the standard semi synthetic is fine as recommened by subaru, but most on here are running a lot more power than standard and so a better oil is needed

But I would and have used 0w-40, 5w-40, 10w-50 and even 10w-60.

I find it particularly amusing when companies say things like:

5w-40 is too thin and will kill your engine.
Use 10w-40 instead it'll work better.

By all means, if you live somewhere warm, go for it.
Don't blame me when you try to start the car at -30 or lower with 10w oil with a pour point of -30 and damaga your motor.
So i've got some helix ultra 5w40. in my garage already, so that will be better for my motor? Although its a summer car get put in storage in winter

It should be absolutely fine. If it's a pre-2000 car, it may be a bit rattly on start up, but will be getting good protection

It does not always have to be if the oil is needed, many owners want better reagardless. Does better oil do a better job? Maybe pslewis could shed some engineering wisdom on that one? After all, why do most go for an Impreza to start with? What is wrong with a mid 90's Ford Escort 1.4 16v? After all oil is oil, tyres are tyres and a car is just a car.

I like pslewis, he has entertained me for years with his wise old engineer ramblings.

Cheers

Guy.

Yea its a 1998 classic. Whats the rattly noise, as my friend had that when he put some 5w-40 in his classic mg? Thanks for your help. Also on website do prices include delivery?

And I like you, Guy .... I have been entertained by your 'Amazing Offers' across all Car Forums - you are the DFS, MFI and Harvey's of the Oil Sales World - good on ya'!

I would like someone to define the word 'better' when applied to oils.

We all know that Semi Synthetic is better than Mineral ... because it retains its properties for longer ... we all know that the secondhand, filtered, really cheap oil is no too good.

But, and this remains my stance, if you change the Oil every 6 months (up to 5,000miles), and the car is driven within its design parameters, then - a good Semi (like the COMMA 10W-40 at £15 for 5 Litres) is just as good as putting a Fully Synthetic £50 Oil in ........ the benefits of the £50 Oil are just not realised within 6 months/5,000 miles.

Things change if the Oil is left in the engine for, say, 2 years/20,000 miles - THEN, and ONLY THEN, does the more expensive oil start to protect your engine 'better'.

Of course, engines operated in extreme conditions need extreme lubrication and cooling - but then, those who operate in such conditions are not so numptie as to ask on here what Oil to use ...... or they shouldn't be doing what they are doing!

My 40 years of Engineering experience tells me that the above is true ..... I am willing to give that knowledge for free - to those willing to listen.

I would have to slighly disagree with that as i said earlier, know people who have old cars using oil, then when added fully semi Synthetic the engine has stopped using oil and slightly improved the running of the car?
